The transfer window slammed shut at midnight on the 2nd of September, with Rangers concluding a duo of deadline day deals; the signings of striker Yousef Chermiti from Everton and the loan signing of Canadian international defender Derek Cornelius from Marseille, but despite the global window closing there are still deals to discuss from last month.
Here is the full rundown of Rangers’ business in September:
In:
Zebedee Lawson
A long-term target for Rangers stretching back to the start of the summer window, the youngster finally arrived from English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion this month, joining up with Stevie Smith’s Under 19’s side for the upcoming season.
He made his debut in Tuesday evening’s CAS Elite League win over Kilmarnock, after becoming the third youth signing after the deals to bring in James Reid and David Odunukan during the summer, helping his team towards a 4-1 victory. Signing a deal until the summer of 2028, he is a long-term prospect for the club and one to keep an eye on for the future.
Out:
Ianis Hagi
After departing Ibrox in the summer Ianis Hagi was linked with moves to Legia Warsaw, Galatasaray and a return to Serie A but the Romanian international eventually agreed a deal to join Turkish side Alanyaspor on a two-year contract.
Archie Stevens
Similar to Hagi, the 19-year-old English winger also departed Rangers on a free transfer this summer after a loan spell with Dunfermline Athletic last season, citing a desire to return to London.
He has found a club in the British capital, joining English Premier League giants Arsenal after a successful trial period during the summer.
Upon joining the Gunners, he said: “I can’t wait to show what I can do. Obviously, it’s such a massive club, so it’s a dream come true to be here, I’m just grateful for the opportunity.”
Leon King
Once one of the club’s brightest projects, making his debut in the League Cup against Falkirk under Steven Gerrard at just 16-years-old and earning himself a Scottish Premiership winners medal later that same season with Gerrard giving him a cameo appearance away at Livingston, saying he "hasn't looked out of place in training" and was not given a sentimental substitution, but rather proved himself through his consistent high-level performances at the time.
King has fallen away since a testing UEFA Champions League campaign in 2022/23. With just nine of his 41 Gers appearances coming in the last two seasons. A failed loan spell at Queen’s Park in the Championship last year spelled the end for King with Rangers accepting a summer bid from Wycombe Wanderers, that move was turned down by the defender who will spent the final year of his contract with Scott Brown’s Ayr United in the second tier, despite being registered for the UEFA Europa League squad by Russell Martin.
Paul Nsio
Departing on loan to Raith Rovers as per the co-operation agreement the two club’s agreed in the summer just days after King, Nsio will look to develop at Starks Park this season with a view to progressing closer to first-team level.
Nsio, now 19, made his debut at the same time as Archie Stevens in a League Cup match against Queen of the South in 2022 when both were just 16, but would need to wait until January 2025 for his next match, with substitute appearances against Union Saint-Gilloise and Dundee United under Phillipe Clement.
Upon joining Rovers, he told their official website: “I’m really happy to be here. I’m an athletic and aggressive player and from speaking with the team here I feel like I will be able to really make an impact and help in the play-off push.”
Blaire McClure
A highly rated member of the Ibrox youth system, McClure joined Rangers in 2023 from Northern Irish side Linfield but after just two-years at Rangers he has departed for the Premier League, joining Nottingham Forst on an initial loan deal with an option to buy.
McClure spent his time with Rangers B and Under 19’s sides, before gaining first team football with Kelty Hearts during a loan spell last season.
Zander Hutton
The teenage full back made some appearances under Russell Martin during the earlier stages of pre-season but has fallen behind captain James Tavernier, Max Aarons and the injured Dujon Sterling in the pecking order, with the defender joining League 1 side Hamilton Accies on loan for the season.
He told the Accies website: “I spoke with the gaffer over the week and was excited by the ambitions he has for the season and how I fit into his plans.
“It was a great experience being part of the Rangers first-team in pre-season, I learned a lot in that period so I’m looking forward to playing and getting involved each week.”
Lewis Stewart
The 18-year-old midfielder has left for Alloa Athletic as part of the co-operation agreement between the clubs and will earn some first team experience with the Wasps will still being available for Stevie Smith’s youth sides.
Connor Campbell & Chris Eadie
The 18-year-old duo have also departed as part of the co-operation loan system, with defender Campbell and forward Eadie heading to Stirling Albion in League 2.
They were joined by right back Arran Kerr on October 1st, a deal we will go into more detail on in October’s update.
