Beyond Russell Martin

As I sat watching Russell Martin's public flogging within the Ibrox press room on Saturday, I have to admit I did start to feel a degree of sympathy for him. That quickly disappeared when I remembered the 90 minutes I just watched along with the baffling words that were now coming out his mouth.

David Edgar and Stevie Clifford took centre stage as Martin was, rightly, delivered the plain truth by fan media. He had the look of a man who was done, who should never have been in this position in the first place and does not have what it takes to turn it around.

You could really go through the press conference line by line and destroy everything he said: "A lot of them didn't want me here in the first place" a particular stand out when he was told that the fans want him gone. There is a degree of truth to that, I myself would fall into that category. But I will give you a wee bit of advice Russell, winning a game or two would have helped you with that!

One comment that I found especially interesting was the talk of the players 'anxiety'. I wouldn't disagree that there is something to that. We all know that this team is full of players who are, frankly, mental weaklings on the pitch. When the potential equaliser was ruled out I thought you could have blown the whistle to end the game there and then as we know our team doesn't react well to such setbacks.

None of that, however, refutes the fact that Martin is simply not a very good manager or at the very least not a very good Rangers manager.

I have been thinking quite a bit this week about that first half against Motherwell. I'll be honest, I actually thought he went a long way to win me over.

The high press particularly made me think 'he gets it' put pressure on these teams and they'll make mistakes and the chances will come. It certainly wasn't perfect, but it looked like a genuine work in progress. I could see what he was trying to do and I could see how it could potentially work and be successful in this league, if we kept at it and worked on it.

Now, I couldn't tell you what we're trying to do. The high press is gone, the inverted full-backs are gone. He's walked back on so much I think all that remains from his first game is the aimless passing about at the back.

So he's done then, I think we are all in agreement with that. With that being the case we must look at those above Martin and ask the question just how long are they going to let this continue?

Immediate pressure is being put upon Kevin Thelwell and Patrick Stewart. The latter, particularly, has had a somewhat strained relationship with the support since he came to the club and each day Martin stays at Rangers is just more angst that will be directed towards Stewart.

There have been reports this week that the decision to persevere with Martin is coming directly from Andrew Cavanagh. If that's the case and it's not directly a Stewart decision, I would hope he is at the very least advising against the current course, because he's been here before.

Stewart's insistence to stick with Phillipe Clement after the Queen's Park debacle only to then sack him a few weeks later is something that he and the club must learn from. Stewart should be hammering home the point he's already made this mistake, do not do it again!

For the owners themselves, this is one that they have to take on the chin. There will come a time when they need to make hard decisions that go against the popular will and wants of the support and hopefully they will be proven right. This is not that time.

The hiring of Martin was a mistake. That is now a fact that cannot be argued by anyone who posses a sound mind and a working pair of eyes. It is done, it is a mistake that has already been made and one that we can now move on from. Every day that he remains as Rangers manager is a new and continual error.

I will have the privilege of being in the press box with Heart and Hand on Saturday. I hope that steak pie is being served, as I think it will have the atmosphere of a sparsely attended funeral. I expect we will probably lose the game on Saturday and that will be another trophy gone with the league title already in the bin for another year.

If that happens, I won't blame Martin nor do I think that we as a support should either. The target of our anger from last Saturday onwards should be going to those who keep him in the dugout.
