As previously reported, representatives of former Rangers midfielder and Romanian international Ianis Hagi have made contact with the Ibrox club in an attempt to reignite negotiations over a possible return.
Hagi officially left Rangers this summer following a mixed five-and-a-half-year spell in Glasgow. During that time, he enjoyed notable highs, most memorably playing a key role in the club’s 2020/21 title-winning campaign and contributing to the run to the UEFA Europa League final in 2022.
His creative flair and technical ability made him a fan favourite, even if his impact was often punctuated by inconsistency.
A serious knee injury suffered in a Scottish Cup tie against Stirling Albion in January 2022 proved a major setback, side-lining him for over a year and casting doubt over his long-term future at the club.
He eventually returned to action following a loan spell at Alavés in Spain during the 2023/24 season, but by that point, his standing at Rangers had changed significantly.
Frozen out of the first-team picture amid a contract dispute, Hagi returned briefly for a league match against St Johnstone in October.
Despite flashes of his quality, his final year at Ibrox was a frustrating one, culminating in his release this summer.
However, interest from other clubs has reportedly failed to meet the expectations of the player and his representatives, prompting them to reach out to Rangers once again.
While no agreement is currently in place, early indications suggest that Hagi could link up with the squad during their pre-season training camp at St George’s Park.
Officially, this would be under the guise of maintaining fitness ahead of the new campaign, but there is speculation that new head coach Russell Martin may take the opportunity to assess Hagi personally.
If he impresses, a new deal remains a possibility, one that could suit both parties under the right terms.
