Rangers have been busy in the transfer market this summer following the high-profile American takeover of the club.

Russell Martin, Kevin Thelwell, and the full recruitment team have been active throughout pre-season, bringing in nine first-team recruits.

Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, and Spurs ‘wonderkid’ Mikey Moore have all arrived on season-long loan deals.

Oscar CortĂŠs has made his loan move permanent, while Lyall Cameron, Joe Rothwell, Emmanuel Fernandez, Thelo Aasgaard, and Djeidi Gassama have joined on full-time contracts at Ibrox.

However, Rangers today confirmed a lower-key signing, one for the future.

Sixteen-year-old Scottish defender James Reid has joined the club from fellow Glaswegian side Queen’s Park.

The teenager links up with Stevie Smith’s Under-19 side and has signed a two-year deal.
A central defender, Reid featured prominently for Queen’s Park in the CAS Elite Under-18 League last season.

Interim Head of Academy David McCallum spoke to the official club website about the signing: “We are pleased to bring James to the club.

“He is a player who impressed playing above his age group for Queen’s Park and was quickly identified by our recruitment team as a young player with quality and potential.

“We believe James has attributes that can be developed further under our strong Academy coaching unit, and we look forward to his continued development.”

Queen’s Park, of course, eliminated our first team from the Scottish Cup last season and have a proud history of developing young talent.

Liverpool legend Andy Robertson is the standout graduate of the Hampden side’s development system, but the Spiders have also brought through William Hill Premiership players such as Lawrence Shankland, Blair Spittal, and Paul McGinn, along with many others scattered throughout the SPFL.

Since turning professional after 152 years, Queen’s Park have increased spending, but they’ve remained committed to youth development.

Callan McKenna broke into their first team at just 16 before moving south to English Premier League side Bournemouth in 2024.

Will James Reid be the next Spiders graduate to make his mark on Scottish football?
It’s too early to say, but he’s now in the best possible place to develop into the player he has the potential to become: at Scotland’s premier club, Rangers.
