Derek McInnes has revealed Rangers are “quite far down the line” in their pursuit of Couhaib Driouech, with the PSV winger subsequently completing his medical just hours after the manager's press conference.
Driouech has emerged as one of Rangers' key attacking targets this summer, with the club working to complete a deal for the 24-year-old Moroccan winger.
Speaking ahead of Thursday night's crucial Europa League clash with Jagiellonia Bialystok, McInnes was asked about the progress of the transfer.
At the time, the Rangers boss was unable to confirm whether the deal had reached its final stages but acknowledged that significant progress had been made.
“I don't know exactly where he is right now,” McInnes said.
“But I think for us, we've been linked with a lot of players. Obviously, that one's gained a bit of momentum and we are quite far down the line with that, but I don't know where it's at currently.
“As I say, once we know, we'll know.”
Just hours after McInnes made those comments, Driouech successfully completed his Rangers medical, bringing the proposed move another step closer to completion.
The winger is now expected to be officially announced as a Rangers player imminently, with the remaining work understood to be largely administrative.
Rangers move closing in
Driouech's medical represents a major milestone in the transfer and comes after Rangers and PSV reached an agreement over the player's move.
The deal is understood to be worth around £7 million, with Rangers agreeing terms to bring the winger to Ibrox.
His arrival would give McInnes another attacking option as he continues to reshape the Rangers squad.
Driouech has experience at the highest level of European football with PSV and has impressed during his time in the Netherlands, including a fantastic goal against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Moroccan joined PSV from Excelsior and has since established himself as an attacking option capable of operating across the frontline.
Recruitment gathering pace
Rangers' need for additional attacking options has increased following the serious injury suffered by Youssef Chermiti.
McInnes confirmed the striker is travelling to London to see a specialist and could undergo surgery next week.
The Rangers manager admitted the club must now consider strengthening in that position as well as continuing their recruitment in wide areas.
“Number nines are normally the most difficult ones to get,” McInnes said.
“We're looking for a bit of pace at the top of the pitch. Ideally, something with a similar profile to Youssef.”
However, Driouech's move was already progressing before Chermiti's injury.
The winger's medical success now means Rangers are closing in on another important addition, with an official announcement expected shortly.
Attention will remain on Thursday's European test against Jagiellonia for McInnes, but the progress of Driouech's transfer provides some positive news during a difficult period for the club.
