Rangers Transfers: What’s holding Russell Martin’s rebuild back?

Rangers’ summer started with promise but has quickly hit a familiar wall; stalled deals, players stuck in limbo, and key exits yet to materialise. With time ticking, Kevin Thelwell has work to do.

Rangers’ transfer activity this summer has been up and down so far.

We entered the window knowing a serious rebuild was required after last season’s horror show. With new owners, a revamped footballing structure, and a modern, progressive head coach in Russell Martin.

Hopes were high. But we’ve seen plenty of rebuilds that didn’t materialise and our fair share of false dawns.

For a while, this summer looked like yet another false promise. June came and went with only Max Aarons arriving, alongside pre-agreed moves for Oscar Cortes and Lyall Cameron.

However, things finally sparked into life in July.

The loan signing of Nasser Djiga was preceded by permanent deals for Joe Rothwell, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Thelo Aasgaard, with Djeidi Gassama arriving soon after.

It looked like we’d finally kicked into gear, and we had, for a brief spell. But once again, things have stalled, largely due to a lack of outgoings.

Leon Balogun, Adam Devine, Cole McKinnon, Ianis Hagi and Tom Lawrence all departed at the end of their contracts, but since then, only Robin Propper has followed them out the door.

Meanwhile, the likes of Ridvan Yilmaz, Ross McCausland, Jose Cifuentes, Ben Davies, Rabbi Matondo, Clinton Nsiala and Leon King all remain at the club despite being told they can leave and instructed to train separately from the main squad.

We need these exits to accelerate in order to complete our recruitment.

That’s a significant amount of money and wages currently sitting unused in the stands.

The futures of strikers Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane also remain uncertain, with bids for both rejected so far this window.

Nico Raskin has yet to commit to a new deal. With just two years left on his contract, it’s time to fish or cut bait, either he extends, or we must cash in now.

We can’t afford another Alfredo Morelos or Ryan Kent situation, where we lose a valuable asset for nothing.

With only a month remaining it is time for our new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, to show his chops, cut the fat, and get us moving, by hook or by crook.
