Rangers split squad as Russell Martin makes brutal early calls

Russell Martin has wasted no time making big decisions at Rangers, splitting his squad and telling several first-team names — including a surprise international — they are free to leave as he shapes his team for the season ahead.

Rangers spent last week down south at the England National Team’s training base at St. George’s Park.

New head coach Russell Martin spent the week putting the players through their paces as well as working on his style of play, set piece routines and more.

The club ended off their week with a behind-closed-doors friendly match against English League One side Barnsley, drawing 1-1 with Danilo netting for the side.

The side have now returned to Scotland, with the addition of Djeidi Gassama to the ranks, and are now in preparation for next Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League qualifier against Greek side Panathinaikos at Ibrox.

The squad remains bloated, with incomings coming faster than the departures so far this transfer window, and Martin intends to trim his squad.

In preparation for this he has divided his squad into two. His main squad and a separate group for those surplus to requirements.

So, who’s in, and who’s out?

Those training away from the main group include returning loanees Ben Davies, Leon King and Jose Cifuentes, alongside defenders Clinton Nsiala and Robin Propper, who have both been told they can depart. Rabbi Matondo is also expected to join this group once he returns from injury.

Joining them is Northern Irish international Ross McCausland, who has also been told he can leave Ibrox this summer amid interest from Switzerland, the United States and the English Championship.

McCausland broke into the team firstly under Giovanni Van Bronckhorst in 2022, before establishing himself under Phillipe Clement in 2023/24.

The now 22-year-old winger has scored seven goals in his 66 first team games for the club but it looks highly unlikely he will add to this tally.

One surprise in the main group is Kieran Dowell, the English midfielder joined from Norwich City under Michael Beale in 2023 but never established a regular place in the side and spent the second half of last season on loan at English side Birmingham City, alongside Ben Davies.

Following their promotion to the Championship it seems their interest in Dowell has cooled, and Martin seems willing to utilize him during pre-season, with the former Everton man playing in games against Brugge, Barnsley and Dunfermline so far.

Will Dowell remain in the plans or is he there to make up the numbers ahead of more arrivals, time will tell.

He scored five and assisted four in 19 matches for the Brum last year but Ibrox minds are made up on him, if he is to come good and have an impact this year it would be one of the most unforeseen comeback stories in the club’s history.
