Rangers are entering this seasons Premier Sports Cup at the last 16 stage of the tournament.

The old-money League Cup group stages were completed this afternoon as St Mirren secured their place in the next round with a win over Ayr United.

Russell Martin and his side received a bye past the group stage round due to their qualification for Europe last season, along with Celtic, Aberdeen, Hibs and Dundee Utd.

The draw took place following the Buddies 2-1 win today with Rangers been marked as ball number two.

Rangers were drawn at home as a seeded team with Scottish League 1 side Alloa Athletic at Ibrox.

Alloa topped their group with the maximum 12 points with wins over Premiership side Dundee, managed by former Hearts, Celtic and Rangers defender Steven Pressley, Airdrieonians, Montrose and Bonnyrigg Rose.

Alloa famously knocked Rangers out of the Scottish Challenge Cup in 2014 under Ally McCoist, with the Wasps coming back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 late in the game.

The sides last met in April 2016, in the Championship, with Mark Warburton’s side drawing 1-1 at Ibrox on the day the side lifted the second tier title.

The Gers had previously defeated the Wasps 5-1 and 4-0 in the early season encounters that year before a 1-1 draw in February prior the match in April.

Alloa were considered a bogey side for us during our lower league tenure and Martin and his men will look to quash that belief with a strong showing over them in this match to advance to the quarter final stages.

An early cup win in this tournament before the end of the year would be a huge boost for the new boss and his squad ahead of our league season as we look to not only reclaim our league title, but our status as Scotland’s most honoured club.

We of course lost to Championship side Queen's Park in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox last year and want to put that behind us and stamp our authority on to these lower league visitors again and reestablish our dominance.

The last 16 ties are scheduled for the weekend of August 16/17 and are subject to change based on broadcaster selections.
