Rangers and Danny Rohl look set to confirm their first senior outgoing transfer of the January transfer window with Oscar Cortes set to be recalled from his loan spell with Sporting Gijon and head to Argentine side Huracan on a loan-to-buy deal.
Argentine outlet El Comercio is reporting Rangers and Segunda Division club, Sporting Gijon are now close to striking an agreement which would see the 22-year-old end his stay in Spain early.
The winger, who only joined Rangers permanently for a fee of over £4 million in the summer, has only managed eight matches for his loan club over the past five months, amassing only 353 minutes of football across all competitions – with only 119 in his five league outings.
Cortes has already turned out for both the Ibrox side and the Spanish club, having made a rare outing at left back in Rangers 4-2 League Cup victory over Alloa Athletic in August, along with cameos against Motherwell in the league and Viktoria Plzen in the UEFA Champions League, but a loophole will allow him to get around the rule that a player can only play for two teams in one season.
That is because of the different in the Argentine football calendar to the British domestic calendar, with Huracan's new campaign kicking off on January 24 and running throughout the year.
Cortes initially joined the club on loan from French Ligue 1 side Lens all the way back in January 2024, under Phillipe Clement – and impressed early on with a goal and assist against Hearts and another assist in the Scottish Cup against Ayr United but picked up an injury in early March which ruled him out for the rest of that season.
He rejoined the club the following summer on another season long loan – this time with an obligation to buy – a move that raised the eyebrow of supporters and onlookers alike.
He never fully recovered from his injury, making just 11 appearances all season as injuries returned and form failed to arrive – also failing to score or assist.
Josh Gentles has also departed Rangers this week – having been recalled from his co-operation loan at Championship side Raith Rovers due to a lack of game time with Dougie Imrie’s side – and has headed to another of Rangers co-operation feeder sides, Alloa Athletic in League 1 for the remainder of the season where he will link up with Gers teammates Lewis Stewart and Calum Adamson.
