Rangers look set to finally strengthen their striking options with the imminent capture of a proven SPFL goal scorer.
Bojan Miovski, the former Aberdeen forward, is expected to agree a move to Ibrox this week ahead of Sunday’s crucial first Old Firm clash of the season.
The North Macedonian international netted 44 goals in 98 appearances during his time at Pittodrie before securing a big money move to La Liga side Girona, part of the City Football Group, last summer for a fee of up to £6.8 million.
His spell in Spain has been less prolific, with just four goals in 23 games since his arrival in Catalonia, and both player and club have now agreed that a departure would be best for all parties.
The 26-year-old looks set to seal a loan switch to Rangers, with an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met, providing head coach Russell Martin with a much-needed boost in attack ahead of Sunday’s derby.
Miovski’s pedigree in Scottish football is unquestionable. Voted into the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in his final season at Aberdeen after netting 16 league goals in 2023/24, he earned a reputation for his intelligent movement, clinical finishing, and ability to operate effectively as a lone striker.
Strong in the air, composed in front of goal, and tireless in pressing from the front, he offers a blend of physical presence and technical quality that Rangers have been missing.
With Cyriel Dessers still recovering from the injury sustained against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League qualifiers, and continuing to attract interest from Italy and Greece, competent reinforcements are badly needed up front.
Meanwhile, Hamza Igamane is set to depart Ibrox for French side Lille in a £10.2 million deal, after the Ligue 1 outfit triggered a previously undisclosed release clause in his contract.
Igamane refused to come on during the second half of last weekend’s 1-1 draw away to St Mirren, and with scans showing no sign of injury, it is clear the Moroccan forward is forcing through a move.
Danilo remains at the club and will be part of Martin’s plans moving forward, but doubts persist over his reliability as a first-choice option, as evidenced by midfielder Thelo Aasgaard being selected ahead of him up top for the trip to Paisley.
Rangers are looking to secure a loan move outwards for Josh Gentles, but fresh attacking additions are required before that can be sanctioned.
Former SPFL star linked with Ibrox move as striker hunt intensifies
Bojan Miovski on Rangers radar with Girona talks underway
Could this Ex-SPFL star be Rangers’ next no.9
Talks between Miovski’s representatives and Rangers have been ongoing throughout the summer, and the deal now looks on the verge of completion.
Barring any last-minute setbacks, the striker will join Rangers this Friday once the squad returns from their midweek trip to Belgium to face Club Brugge, and he is expected to be in contention for Sunday’s derby against Celtic.
Rangers remain in the market for at least one more striker before the transfer window closes next week.
