Rangers looking to seal first signings of Röhl era before Pittodrie test

Early January business could see Rangers strengthen key areas as Danny Röhl looks to build on a four-game winning run.

Rangers look poised to kick-start their January transfer window with two signings ready to go straight into the starting lineup and improve the team.

After four consecutive league victories, including a statement 3–1 Old Firm win at Celtic Park, the Ibrox side have surged into second place and closed the gap on leaders Hearts to just three points.

Now, with momentum firmly behind them, recruitment is accelerating.

It is expected that Rangers first signings of the winter window,  and the first under head coach Danny Röhl, will arrive imminently, with Belgian left-back Tuur Rommens and Danish defensive midfielder Tochi Chukwuani both firmly in focus.

Röhl’s appointment in October, following the dismissal of Russell Martin, marked a decisive shift in direction. Martin’s tenure - statistically the poorest of any permanent Rangers manager - left the squad unbalanced, fragile and ill-equipped for the demands of domestic and European football.

But now, with momentum behind them, they look ready to pull the trigger on two names who could fire them into the top spot in the second half of the campaign.

Rommens: fixing a glaring flaw

Few positions highlighted Rangers summer missteps more starkly than left-back.

The departures of Jefte, Ridvan Yilmaz and Robbie Fraser left the squad reliant on 19-year-old Brentford loanee Jayden Meghoma - a talented prospect, but one exposed by the physical and tactical realities of the Scottish Premiership on occasion – as with any young player, consistency is the issue.

Rommens, currently with Westerlo, offers a very different profile.

At 22, he combines physical strength, positional discipline and composure in possession - attributes Rangers have too often lacked this season.

Standing at 5ft 11in and comfortable defending his back post as well as contributing in build-up, he fits Röhl’s demand for robustness without sacrificing technical quality.

The Belgian Under-21 international is managed by former Rangers coach Issame Charaï, a connection that has helped smooth dialogue between clubs. Rangers are understood to have lodged a bid in the region of €3.5 million, with optimism growing that the deal could be concluded ahead of Sunday’s trip to Pittodrie.

Such a signing would directly address long-standing criticism from figures like Ally McCoist, who famously labelled Rangers “wee boys” earlier in the season - a verdict that stung precisely because it rang true.

Chukwuani: strengthening the spine

While Rommens would fix a visible weakness, the potential arrival of Chukwuani would reinforce the very core of Röhl’s evolving side.

The Sturm Graz midfielder needs little introduction to Rangers supporters after playing the full 90 minutes in the Austrians’ 2–1 Europa League win over Rangers earlier this season in Martin's penultimate match. His performance was disciplined, aggressive and tactically astute and it left a clear impression on the Rangers recruitment team.

Reports suggest Rangers have submitted a bid in excess of €4 million for the Danish international, underlining how highly Röhl values the number six role.

With Connor Barron excelling but already showing signs of fatigue, and midfield depth stretched by injuries, Chukwuani would provide immediate competition, rotation and insurance.

Crucially, this is not about replacing Barron - it is about protecting him, elevating the level, and ensuring Rangers can sustain intensity across competitions.

However, as we exclusively revealed yesterday – Barron is facing a spell on the sidelines and Chukwuani would arrive with impeccable timing.

A shift in strategy

What ties both pursuits together is intent. These are not stopgaps. They are profile signings: young, physically capable, tactically intelligent, and with resale value.

That marks a clear shift from recent windows defined by short-term fixes and late compromises such as the failed summer signing of Joe Rothwell – who will depart the club this month and return to the English Championship with several suitors interested in the former Leeds and Southampton man.

Röhl has been vocal about wanting business done early, allowing new arrivals time to embed rather than chase fitness in February. If Rangers can conclude one - or both - of these deals before the Pittodrie trip, it would send a powerful message internally and externally.

January will still define Rangers season – a month pinpointed as pivotal for the title’s destination by former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson.

But after four straight wins, belief restored, and a clear recruitment plan emerging, this time it feels less like a scramble - and far more like a statement.

Further down the line

In terms on further incomings Rangers have been heavily linked with Swedish midfielder Silas Andersen of BK Häcken but this deal is still just speculation with no official bid being made at this point.

Josh Windass will not return to Ibrox as Wrexham are asking for a fee far higher than Rangers are willing to meet - the Ibrox club initially wanted their former player back on loan but the Welsh side would not agree to a temporary deal.

Motherwell top performer Elliot Watt is down the list of midfield options and is considered a backup plan for the two already mentioned while James Penrice is a back up option if the Rommens' deal falls apart.

Rangers do want to sign a striker this window to compliment Yousef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski - but this is down their list of priorities and will only be sanctioned if third-choice forward Danilo departs Ibrox this month.

In terms of outgoings, as mentioned earlier Rothwell will depart, Kieran Dowell is linked with a loan move to Hull City for the remaining six-months of his deal, Djeidi Gassama has been linked with both Spanish side Villareal and Belgian side Club Brugge.

Lyall Cameron and Findlay Curtis may both leave on loan, the former to Dundee United and the latter to Kilmarnock - who just appointed ex-Ranger Neil McCann as manager.

Oscar Cortes will be recalled from his loan with Sporting Gijon and join Argentine side Huracan on a loan-to-buy deal.

Rabbi Matondo will likely remain at Ibrox until the summer - with the player unwilling to take a wage drop to depart Rangers.
