Rangers have discussed a potential return for Jayden Meghoma internally as they assess their options at left-back, but no offer has been made and there have been no talks with Brentford at this stage.
Meghoma is one of the names being considered by Rangers following the injury to first-choice left back Tuur Rommens in Sunday’s defeat to Hibernian, with the Belgian expected to be sidelined for up to ten weeks.
The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Ibrox from Brentford and is therefore a familiar option to the Rangers recruitment team.
However, there is currently nothing advanced between the clubs.
Meghoma's name has been discussed internally as Rangers consider potential solutions to their left-back problem, but the club have not made an approach to Brentford at this stage.
Rommens injury changes Rangers plans
The situation has become more pressing following Rommens' injury during Sunday's defeat to David Gray’s side.
Derek McInnes confirmed that the defender could be out for between “four to eight weeks,” in the best case scenario, leaving Rangers short of options in the position.
The Rangers boss admitted the club were “playing with fire” with their current defensive numbers and revealed they were looking to act quickly in the transfer market.
That has prompted Rangers to assess a number of potential solutions, with Meghoma among the players being discussed.
The fact he already knows the club and spent last season at Ibrox makes him an obvious name for Rangers to consider.
However, no decision has been made to pursue a deal and no offer has been submitted.
James Penrice also on Rangers radar
Rangers remain interested in James Penrice as another possible solution.
The club's preference in that situation is understood to be a loan deal, while AEK Athens would prefer to sanction a permanent transfer.
That difference in valuation and deal structure remains an obstacle.
Rangers' preference for a temporary signing is also linked to their longer-term plans for the position.
Sixteen-year-old Ashton Scally is viewed internally as a potential long-term understudy to Rommens.
Scally made his Rangers first-team debut in the final-day victory over Falkirk last season but has missed all of pre-season because of injury.
Rangers therefore do not necessarily want to commit significant funds to a permanent left-back who could block Scally's pathway once he is fit and ready to compete for a first-team place.
Meghoma remains an option, not a negotiation
Meghoma's previous spell at Rangers means he could potentially provide a short-term solution while Rommens recovers.
But at this stage, Rangers are simply considering their options.
There have been no talks with Brentford, and no offer has been made for Meghoma.
The situation could develop quickly given the limited time remaining in the transfer window and Rommens' expected absence, but for now the defender remains one name among several being assessed by the club.
Rangers' immediate priority is finding sufficient cover without disrupting their longer-term plans for the position.
