Rangers close in on January double swoop as Skov Olsen and Rommens deals near completion

Rangers could be set to secure two major signings before their Scottish Cup fourth-round clash with Annan Athletic on Friday evening – with one move representing a long-awaited return to a deal first explored more than three years ago.

After already landing Danish midfielder Tochi Chukwuani from Sturm Graz for a reported £4 million ahead of Sunday’s 2–0 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie, Ibrox recruitment chiefs are now closing in on further reinforcements as Danny Rohl continues to reshape his squad.

One of the most eye-catching developments is Rangers’ renewed pursuit of Andreas Skov Olsen, a player the club first tried to sign back in 2022 under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Financial limitations prevented a deal at the time, with the winger instead joining Club Brugge before securing a high-profile move to Wolfsburg for around £12 million just twelve months ago.

Now, circumstances have shifted.

Rangers are moving closer to finalising a deal to sign the Denmark international on loan until the end of the season, with personal terms now close to being agreed following positive discussions over the last 24 hours.

We revealed last week that Skov Olsen was available for transfer and suggested Rangers could take another look at the winger before it became clear Rohl was indeed targeting the wide man as a key addition to his forward line – and talks have accelerated since then.

The 26-year-old is understood to be keen on a switch to Ibrox, motivated by the chance to play a central role in Rangers Scottish Premiership title push over the coming months.

While no agreement has yet been reached with Wolfsburg, Rangers are working hard behind the scenes to push the deal over the line.

Further discussions are expected as the Bundesliga side weigh up their options amid interest in Skov Olsen from across Europe.

The winger remains under contract in Germany until 2029, having only joined Wolfsburg last January, and is now waiting on sign-off from the club to complete a move this month.

For Rangers, it would mark the successful conclusion of a long-standing pursuit. Skov Olsen had also been tracked as far back as Steven Gerrard’s time at Ibrox, with the main pursuit coming under his Dutch successor’s tenure, underlining how highly the club have rated him for several years.

For Rohl, the deal would add proven top-level quality to his attacking options – a winger with UEFA Champions League experience, international pedigree, and a history of delivering goals and assists from wide areas.

Rangers are also close to completing their move for Tuur Rommens from Belgian side Westerlo, with the left-back’s arrival delayed only by minor visa issues that are expected to be resolved shortly – due to the impact of Brexit it is no longer as simple for EU based players to move to the United Kingdom.

Rommens has been identified as a long-term solution on the left side of defence following the departures of Jefte, Ridvan Yilmaz and Robbie Fraser last summer, which has left teenage loanee Jayden Meghoma as the only natural option in the position – a decision worsened by the long-term absence of central defender Derek Cornelius, who can cover there.

The 22-year-old offers a very different profile – stronger, more physical, and more defensively robust – traits Rohl has repeatedly emphasised as priorities in his recruitment strategy.

Former Rangers coach Issam Charai, now the manager of Westerlo, was glowing in his assessment of the defender’s suitability for life at Ibrox.

“He will be the perfect fit,” Charai said of his move to Ibrox.

“A player who is physically strong, gets his shirt wet, doesn’t shy away from duels, and likes to go off the line.

“The fans will love him.”

Those qualities align closely with the demands of the Scottish Premiership, where full-backs are expected to cope with physical battles, relentless pressing, and high-tempo transitions.

Rangers January business is gathering pace after a slow start to the window. The signing of Chukwuani has already added depth to midfield, particularly following Connor Barron’s long-term knee injury, and the potential arrivals of Skov Olsen and Rommens would strengthen two more key areas of the squad.

With Rangers now second in the league and just three points behind leaders Hearts, the club’s recruitment push reflects a belief that this season still offers a genuine title opportunity.

Röhl has made it clear he wants players who can make an immediate impact but also fit into a longer-term vision focused on physicality, tactical discipline, and consistency.

While transfer headlines dominate the build-up to Friday’s Scottish Cup tie, Rangers remain focused on the task at hand against League Two side Annan Athletic.

Their opponents have made some squad moves of their own, with defender Cammy Clark returning to the club from Dumbarton, while Josh Todd has moved in the opposite direction to the Sons.

Annan will be hoping those changes help them spring an upset, but Rangers  squad depth and quality should make them heavy favourites.

With Chukwuani already in the building and Skov Olsen and Rommens potentially arriving imminently, Rangers squad could look significantly stronger by the time the cup action gets underway.

If both deals are finalised in the coming days, it would represent a major statement of intent from the Ibrox board – reinforcing Röhl’s side at both ends of the pitch and keeping momentum firmly on their side as the season enters a decisive phase.

Rangers are also still linked with several other players across the park.

Defender Xavier Mbuyamba has been linked with a move from Dutch side FC Volendam. Midfielders Elliot Watt and Dan Neil have been linked with moves from Motherwell and Sunderland respectively, but a move for BK Hacken’s Silas Andersen has went quiet since the move for Chukwuani was completed.

In the forward areas, Sporting Charleroi wide-man Parfait Guiagon has been linked in recent days with Rangers facing competition for his signature from Phillipe Clement’s Norwich City, while there has been confirmed interest in strikers Kieron Bowie and Damir Redzic from Hibernian and Dunajská Streda – but only if a forward, likely Danilo, departs Ibrox first.
