Danny Röhl says Lyall Cameron remains fully available for selection despite the midfielder not making the squad for Rangers 1–0 victory over Hibernian at Easter Road last night.

The absence of the 23-year-old summer signing raised eyebrows when the teams were announced, particularly given Cameron has featured both of Röhl’s two squads since taking charge, coming on at the weekend against Kilmarnock and has been tipped as a player whose technical profile suits the new bosses approach.

But Röhl moved quickly to clarify there is no injury issue.

Asked directly whether Cameron had “picked up another injury,” Röhl replied simply: “No.”

Pressed again on whether Cameron was available for football, he added: “Yeah.”

Röhl’s short answer was short and sweet but it suggested that Cameron’s omission was a selection call, not a fitness setback or disciplinary issue.

Rotation and roles under Röhl

Across his post-match interview, Röhl repeatedly stressed the importance of squad rotation as Rangers adapt to a new tactical structure and more physically demanding style of play.

The German has shifted the team into a 3-4-1-2 shape, prioritising intensity, defensive security and higher pressing than seen under axed former boss Russell Martin earlier in the season.

That system has already seen different players come to the fore, with opportunities shared between Danilo, Mikey Moore, Djeidi Gassama, Thelo Aasgaard and Yousef Chermiti over the past two games.

Röhl explained that altering roles and responsibilities is central to building a dynamic, competitive squad, something Cameron seems to still be a part of.

He said: “We need more than just 11 players with such a schedule.

“This is job-sharing at the moment, and everyone needs to feel the connection to each other.”

That message suggests Cameron is in contention to return for Sunday’s Scottish League Cup semi-final against Celtic, depending on tactical needs and training performance.

Is Cameron still in Röhl’s plans?

Cameron’s absence from the matchday squad appears to have been situational, rather than down to discipline or a lack of faith from the German gaffer.

Röhl is still evaluating his squad in real time, with very little time on the training pitch due to the hectic fixture schedule and is encouraging competition and demanding adaptability.

Cameron fits the profile for that: press-resistant, active without the ball, and able to carry the team up the pitch quickly.

It would not be surprising to see him reintroduced soon, especially in matches where Rangers expect more possession and midfield control.

The bigger picture

Rangers gritty victory at Easter Road, which included their first away clean sheet in 25 games and the one that ended Hibs own 16-match unbeaten home league run, marked another step in Röhl’s early progression.

The connection between players and supporters, is beginning to re-form, as seen by the full-time reaction: “They deserved that moment with the fans at the end. We are coming closer to each other,” he said.

Cameron will likely have a role to play in where this project goes next. For now, the message was clear: He’s fit. He’s available. And he’s still part of the plan – just not for last night.
