After a lengthy search for a Russell Martin replacement, Rangers finally landed Danny Röhl who is walking into one of the toughest periods in the club's history. The German will need to oversee a turnaround at Ibrox but also deal with a leadership team in director Kevin Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart, coming under huge criticism over shambolic decisions.

Röhl has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to replace Martin but he was one of several candidates who were eyed for the role. Former boss Steven Gerrard pulled out of the race while Kevin Muscat reached advanced talks but opted out.

Who is Danny Röhl?

Danny Röhl is the new Rangers manager who replaced Russell Martin on October 20th. He is a German coach, who spent his playing career as a defender in the lower divisions of German football. An ACL injury cut his career short in his early 20s.

Born in Zwickau, Saxony, East Germany, Röhl broke into coaching first as a video analyst at RB Leipzig in 2010, working this role for four years. He was then appointed Frank Leicht's assistant for the youth team, but during his time as a video analyst, he worked with former Premier League managers Ralph Hassenhuttl and Ralf Rangnick.

Röhl moved into a first-team assistant managerial role at Leipzig in 2016, working alongside Hassenhuttl. He followed the Austrian to Southampton in December 2018 and was part of an impressive backroom team who kept the Saints in the top-fllight.

After Hassenhuttl was sacked, Röhl returned to the Bundesliga to become Hansi Flick's assistant at Bayern Munich. He was a member of a coaching team that steered the Bavarians to the Champions League, two Bundesliga titles, among other honors before spending time with Flick's replacement Niko Kovac.

Flick brought Röhl in as his right-hand man while in charge of Germany albeit a dissapointing tenure. But his stock had grown during these spells and Southampton were keen on appointing him before they turned to Martin in 2023.

The first managerial job of Röhl's career came with Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Championship. He arrived at Hillsborough in late 2023 and was tasked with guiding the Owls to safety in the second division in difficult circumstances.

Wednesday were in turmoil with fan protests against chairman Dejphon Chansiri. Players wages went unpaid, there was a limited transfer budget and ageing facilities.

Röhl oversaw 34 wins and 36 defeats in 89 games while in charge of the Championship outfit. His side finished 20th in the 2023-24 season and 12th in the 2024-25 campaign.

The 36-year-old is the joint-fourth youngest coach in Europe with only Parma's Carlos Cuesta (30), Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler (32) and Southampton's Will Still (33) ahead of him. He is also the first German manager in Rangers' history.
