The qualities Derek McInnes believes Dan Neil will bring to Rangers have long been recognised by those who worked alongside him at Sunderland.
The 24-year-old midfielder has joined Rangers on a three-year contract after leaving Sunderland this summer, arriving at Ibrox following a loan spell at Ipswich Town in the second half of last season.
Neil leaves Wearside having made 201 senior appearances, captaining his boyhood club to promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs in 2025 before spending last season helping Ipswich secure their own promotion.
While his performances on the pitch established him as one of Sunderland's most important players, former manager Tony Mowbray, has previously suggested the midfielder's greatest strengths extend beyond his technical ability.
Mowbray described Neil as an "exceptional human being", praising both his professionalism and willingness to improve.
The former Celtic manager highlighted the midfielder's habit of analysing his own training sessions before undertaking additional work on the training ground, pointing to a level of commitment that helped accelerate his development.

Neil's leadership has also been praised by long-time Sunderland teammate Luke O'Nien.
The defender described the midfielder as a humble captain who had remained grounded despite his growing reputation, adding that Neil was "all in" for Sunderland throughout his time at the club.
O'Nien also said Neil led "with love", suggesting his influence came through supporting teammates and putting the collective ahead of personal recognition.

Those characteristics appear to align closely with the profile Rangers have targeted under McInnes this summer.
Speaking after completing his move to Ibrox, Neil admitted the expectations that accompany playing for Rangers were a major attraction.
"It is a new chapter for myself, and I am really excited to be signing for Rangers," he told Rangers TV.
"I'm really looking forward to what the next few years can bring.
"I have played for Sunderland for a number of years and the weight and expectation of the fans to win every week and the feeling of it making or breaking people's weekends is something that drives me.
"I've spoken to many people who have been here, and they said it's a very similar feeling. As a character and a person that really drives me to give 110 per cent day in and day out, and I need that in my career."

McInnes believes Neil's experience belies his age.
"I'm absolutely delighted to welcome Dan to the club," the new Rangers manager said. "He will be an excellent addition to our squad.”
"He is a technically gifted midfielder who is strong in possession, can contribute goals and brings tremendous energy to the team.
"At 24, we are signing a player who is hungry and ambitious, but who already possesses significant experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League in 2025.
"I'm really looking forward to working with Dan throughout pre-season as we prepare for the challenges ahead."
Neil had previously been a target for Rangers during the January transfer window under Danny Rohl but opted to join Ipswich Town on loan.
Six months later, McInnes has succeeded in bringing the midfielder to Ibrox, with Rangers hoping the leadership qualities highlighted by Mowbray and O'Nien will now be reflected in blue.
