Rangers January recruitment plans have begun to take clearer shape, with North East-based English Sky Sports journalist, Keith Downie revealing that the Ibrox club have made enquiries for two of Sunderland’s promotion-winning players – midfielder Dan Neil and winger Romaine Mundle.
As Danny Rohl looks to refresh his squad for the second half of the season, the potential arrival of both players would boost the squads title hopes.
Dan Neil is the standout name in the report. A lifelong Sunderland supporter who has spent his entire career with the Black Cats, he was the club’s captain during their dramatic play-off triumph at Wembley last May but Neil has surprisingly featured just twice in the English Premier League this season.
Now out of contract in the summer, Rangers see an opportunity to secure a permanent deal rather than a short-term loan. That alone makes the move particularly attractive.
From a Rangers perspective, Neil fits the current midfield needs almost perfectly. With the club seeking energy, leadership and durability in the centre of the pitch, the 24-year-old’s experience captaining his hometown club to promotion carries weight.
Rangers have often lacked a commanding presence in midfield during big domestic and European fixtures, and Neil’s profile suggests a player comfortable with responsibility and pressure.
Romaine Mundle, 22, meanwhile, represents a different type of option. The winger has made eight substitute appearances this season but is reportedly keen for more regular football.
For Rangers, wide areas remain a key focus, especially with inconsistencies in form and availability across the front line, with head coach Rohl saying he wants more players who can contribute up front and support the centre forwards.
Mundle’s pace, directness and willingness to take on defenders could add an extra dimension to Rangers attacking play, particularly in games where they dominate possession against deep-lying opponents.
Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris has openly admitted that players who are unlikely to feature heavily in the second half of the campaign could be allowed to leave to gain minutes.
That admission works in Rangers favour, suggesting negotiations may be straightforward – especially for Mundle, who is available on loan.
The Dan Neil situation is more complex, but also more promising. With his contract expiring in the summer, Sunderland risk losing their former captain for nothing.
Rangers interest in a permanent deal could appeal to both club and player, offering Neil a new challenge while providing Sunderland with a fee and squad flexibility.
