Rangers look set to make a surprise call this evening ahead of their first leg tie against Belgian side Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League playoff round.

Russell Martin looks set to name a starting lineup that will include new signing Jayden Meghoma at left back just a day after joining the Ibrox club.

But the real shock looks set to come in the central forward position, with Hamza Igamane short of match sharpness and Danilo failing to impress in a starting role, Cyriel Dessers looks set to start against the Belgian side.

Dessers started the campaign out of the picture due to injury issues, with the Brazilian Danilo playing the opening matches.

However, upon his return to fitness the Nigerian international returned to the starting berth up top, following 51 goals across his first two years in Blue.

Linked with a move to Athens earlier this window with a bid from the Greek side confirmed as rejected by Martin, fans were left wondering where the controversial strikers future lied.

A stunning display against Viktoria Plzen as Rangers won the first leg of the third qualifying round 3-0 was followed by a poor display against Dundee at Ibrox in the club’s first home league match, which ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw.

He was also poor in the next match, a 2-1 second leg defeat to Plzen, where he was substituted off early in the second half, after appearing to seriously injure himself after throwing himself to the floor after a tackle.

Early suggestions indicated it was a serious injury, potentially a season ender but Martin later confirmed Dessers would be back sooner than expected, and would be set to feature in this match against Brugge.

Martin also confirmed that Igamane was unlikely to start as the Moroccan himself also works his way back from a knock, seemingly leaving the position clear for Danilo to return.

Reports however, suggest that Dessers will return to start tonight, seemingly overcoming his issues quicky.

A big performance is needed from the former Feyenoord man as Rangers look to take a step closer to a return to the UEFA Champions League proper for the first time since 2022.

A replication of his Plzen first leg showing is required, a repeat of his Dundee showing will leave the Gers struggling and put their UCL hopes in the balance.
