Where Rangers 2022 Europa League heroes are now as Braga return to Ibrox

Three years on from their run to Seville, the squad that once lit up Europe has been dismantled, laying bare the scale of Rangers’ decline ahead of a crucial Ibrox showdown.

Rangers take on Portuguese side Braga at Ibrox tonight in the UEFA Europa League as Danny Röhl and his side attempt to halt a bruising run of four consecutive defeats in the league phase. The Gers sit bottom of the expanded 36-team table - 36th out of 36 - and must win to retain even the faintest hope of progression.

It is a stark contrast to the Rangers team that twice eliminated Braga in the knockout rounds in 2020 and 2022, and even more so to the side that reached the Europa League Final in Seville.

With the squad now hollowed out, recruitment failures stacking up, and the club recently dismissing CEO Patrick Stewart and Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell, the gulf between then and now is impossible to ignore.

So what became of the 2022 side that carried Rangers to one of their greatest modern European nights? Here is where they stand today.

Allan McGregor

McGregor retired in 2023 after a second spell as first-choice goalkeeper and briefly assisted Barry Ferguson as a goalkeeping coach during the interim period last season. Now, he divides his time between punditry and media work, still a familiar face in Scottish football circles.

James Tavernier

The captain remains at Ibrox, is the only 2022 survivor still at the club. At 34, Tavernier is showing signs of slowing down, but he continues to be a regular starter and remains a key figure in the dressing room despite a natural decline.

Connor Goldson

Goldson departed Rangers in the summer of 2024 for Cypriot side Aris Limassol. Now well settled abroad, he has reunited with former teammate Leon Balogun at the heart of their defence, while Ross McCausland is also on loan there from Rangers.

Calvin Bassey

Sold in 2022 to Ajax for a club-record fee, Bassey later moved to the Premier League with Fulham, where he has established himself as a robust and reliable top-flight defender. His rise since leaving Ibrox underlines how significant a loss he became and the poor reinvestment of the fee we received for him.

Borna Barišić

Barišić left Rangers in 2024 after his form never truly recovered from that torrid afternoon at Celtic Park in February 2022.

A short stint at Leganés was derailed by a serious injury, and he remains contracted to Trabzonspor, though he is firmly out of favour and expected to return to Croatia soon.

Joe Aribo

The scorer in the 2022 final, Aribo left Rangers for Southampton in 2022, but by late 2025 his future is uncertain after mixed seasons in England.

His trajectory since leaving Ibrox contrasts sharply with the consistency he once brought to the Rangers midfield.

Aaron Ramsey

Ramsey’s brief, high-profile, but ultimatley failed loan during the run to Seville is long behind him. As of November 2025, he is a free agent again, navigating the late stage of a career marked by brilliance but disrupted by fitness issues. He recently noted an interest in a return to Scotland.

Ryan Jack

Jack left Ibrox in 2024 after seven seasons. His departure was part of the broader squad reset, and he continues his career abroad with TFF First League club Esenler Erokspor but maintains strong ties with the Rangers support.

John Lundstram

Lundstram, the scorer of several iconic European goals, exited Rangers in 2024 at the end of his contract. His combative presence in midfield has proven difficult for the club to replace despite his decline towards the end of his spell in Scotland.

Kemar Roofe

Roofe’s time at Ibrox ended in 2024 with his contract expiry. Injuries limited his impact across his later seasons, but his extra-time winner against Braga in 2022 remains one of the defining moments of Rangers’ European story. He has recently signed for English League 1 side Walsall on a short-term deal after departing Derby County in the summer.

Ryan Kent

Kent is a free agent as of late 2025 after a turbulent period away from Rangers that never quite recaptured the form or freedom he enjoyed at Ibrox. His future remains unresolved after leaving MLS side Seattle Sounders earlier this month.

Subs:

Leon Balogun

Balogun enjoyed two separate spells at Rangers but ultimately moved on again in 2025, joining Aris Limassol where he is now partnered once more with Connor Goldson.

Glen Kamara

Kamara moved on from Rangers after falling out of favour in the latter part of his time at the club. His departure removed one of the team’s most technically secure midfielders, a void the current side still feels. Departed Ibrox for Leeds United but is now back at French side Rennes after a loan with Saudi side Al Shabab last season.

Fashion Sakala

Sakala exited in search of consistent starts amid a rift with then-boss Michael Beale and has since enjoyed a successful career with Saudi side Al-Fayha.

His departure added to a forward line that has largely struggled to replace his pace and unpredictability.

Scott Wright

Wright left during the sweeping rebuild of 2024. A willing squad player during his time at Ibrox, he now plays elsewhere as Rangers continue reshaping their attacking options.

Now features for English Championship side and Tom Brady backed Birmingham City where he lifted the EFL League 1 trophy last season.

Scott Arfield

Arfield remained influential until the end of his Rangers spell, both on and off the pitch. He has since continued playing and is back at boyhood side Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership.
