Derek McInnes has confirmed Rangers are on the verge of completing the signing of Olwethu Makhanya while alluding that the club are still working to bring Jahnoah Markelo to Ibrox before the Premiership opener against Dundee United.

The Rangers boss admitted one deal is expected to be announced within the next 24 hours, while negotiations remain ongoing over a second addition in what is a key position for his squad.

McInnes also confirmed Oliver Antman is closing in on an exit after agreeing a move away from the club.

Olwethu Makhanya set for Rangers announcement

McInnes revealed Makhanya is expected to become Rangers' latest summer signing after positive progress in negotiations.

"We'll probably be able to announce one either tonight or tomorrow."

Asked specifically about the MLS defender, the Rangers manager added:

"Yes, that's one that is close. As I say, we're pretty close to maybe announcing that. So it would probably be safe to say that one looks pretty good for us."

The South African centre-back has been identified as a player capable of strengthening a defence McInnes admits is lacking depth.

"He's another one with a similar profile in terms of age. He's got a lot of athleticism. He has good potential.

"While he's coming from the MLS and he's coming to a different country and a different type of football, we feel he's got the attributes that can cope with that."

McInnes acknowledged Rangers are still light defensively despite Makhanya's imminent arrival.

"When you look at it defensively, we're short on numbers.

"We probably still need to look to bring in another couple of defenders before the window closes."

Rangers continue Jahnoah Markelo pursuit

Attention has also turned to Coventry City attacker Jahnoah Markelo, with Rangers continuing talks over a deal with Frank Lampard's side.

McInnes confirmed another signing remains a priority and hopes both new arrivals could be available for Friday night's league opener.

"We're still actively trying to do one more, which is quite an important one for us in terms of position-wise.

"We haven't given up hope that both lads could be on board for us going to Dundee on Friday."

When asked whether the second target was an attacking player, McInnes replied: "Yes. I think we're really strong in certain areas and there are some key areas that we need to bring one or two in."

Rangers are understood to favour a permanent transfer for Markelo, while Coventry would prefer the versatile forward to leave on loan, with discussions continuing between the two clubs.
