Danny Röhl arrived at Rangers as Russell Martin’s replacement with an impressive CV. He had been Hansi Flick’s assistant with Germany and Bayern Munich. Röhl also worked under Ralph Hassenhutl at Southampton and RB Leipzig.
Röhl impressed as the manager of Sheffield Wednesday under difficult circumstances. However, a key theme from his time with Wednesday in the Championship is already showing signs at Rangers.
Last season with Wednesday, Röhl’s side failed to beat Burnley, Sunderland, or Leeds, who would go on to be promoted to the Premier League. It is still early days in his tenure at Rangers, but he has been unable to get results against top sides.
Röhl’s Rangers have beaten Kilmarnock, Hibernian, and Dundee. However, they lost in the Old Firm derby against Celtic and suffered a defeat against the Serie A side AS Roma. There was also a loss to the Norwegian side Brand, but that was in Röhl’s first game.
The losses to Celtic and Roma would be of concern to Röhl, as they prove that he has so far only been able to get results against teams that he is expected to beat. The loss to the Hoops was in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, and they face them again in the Scottish Premiership in early January.
Danny Röhl has not managed any notable victories so far
Rangers face other top teams in the Europa League, including FC Porto. Rohl needs to start getting results against teams of this caliber to prove he is worthy of managing the Gers.
This Scottish Premiership has been unprecedented, with Hearts taking a seven-point lead already at the top of the division. However, it is usually Rangers and Celtic that battle it out for the title. It has been 40 years since the last time neither side one the league. This was the 1984/85 season when Aberdeen, who were managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, claimed the title.
Rangers are already 12 points behind Hearts, so Rohl aims to steady the ship and qualify for Europe as a minimum. The pressure will be on Röhl to get the club back to challenging next season.
To get the Gers challenging Celtic and Hearts for future titles, he will need to start getting results against the top sides in the division.
Rangers have also impressed in Europe in recent seasons, reaching the 2021/22 Europa League final. Röhl will need to assemble a side that can beat top European opposition as well if he is to succeed at Ibrox.
