Rangers defender Clinton Nsiala has seen one potential Cypriot destination ruled out, while another club has refused to deny speculation linking them with a move.
Pafos had emerged as a possible destination for the 22-year-old after the Rangers Review previously reported interest in Nsiala ‘from clubs in France and Cyprus’ with Foot.CD later implying Pafos were interested.
We, at Inside Ibrox, initially discussed why Pafos could potentially move for the player, after several central defensive departures during their summer window.
The Cypriot side appeared to make sense as a potential option after defensive departures left them looking for reinforcements at centre-back.
Pafos deny Nsiala link
However, we have now established that Nsiala ‘is not on Pafos' list of options’.
A reputable source in Cyprus initially said there had been nothing reported locally linking the Rangers defender with Pafos. Who then later confirmed that Nsiala is not currently on their list of potential targets.
Omonoia Nicosia expect Nsiala rumours
Attention has subsequently turned towards Omonoia Nicosia.
The club, formerly the home of ex-Rangers winger Brandon Barker, have refused to 'confirm or deny' the link to Nsiala.
However, they have indicated that they expect the rumour to begin circulating amongst their fanbase as the window progresses towards it's finale. Again, refusing to outright deny it.
The connection to Omonoia
There is also a potential connection through Nsiala's representatives which adds further context to the speculation.
Nsiala is represented by Grace Diamouangana of Ekxellence Sports, which also represents former Omonoia Nicosia manager Yannick Ferrera. Ferrera took charge of Omonoia in October 2022, replacing Neil Lennon after the former Celtic boss was dismissed, before leaving the club in February 2023.
Our source in Cyprus noted that technical directors at clubs on the island tend to work with trusted agents, meaning existing relationships between representatives and clubs can be relevant when potential transfers are explored.
That agency connection is therefore another reason the Omonoia speculation is worth keeping an eye on, although it does not confirm that the club are pursuing Nsiala.
Simon Tarapoulouzis, Omonoia's head of recruitment, was also previously involved in the club's scouting structure and recommended Ferrera for the managerial position following Lennon's departure.
That does not amount to confirmation that the club are actively pursuing the Rangers defender, but the club's reluctance to rule out the speculation is notable given the circumstances.
Omonoia have just lost Nikolas Panayiotou to FC Utrecht, with the left-footed centre-back completing a three-year move to the Dutch club with an option for another season. Panayiotou had made 150 appearances for Omonoia before leaving the club.
Nsiala is a left-footed centre-back himself and remains outside Derek McInnes' first-team plans at Rangers, meaning a move could appeal to all parties if a suitable offer emerges.
Rangers central defensive situation
Rangers currently have three first-team centre-halves in Emmanuel Fernandez, Olwethu Makhanya and Ben Godfrey, with Scotland international John Souttar joining Nsiala in the ‘bomb squad’ at the Rangers Training Centre.
Pafos can be ruled out based on the information available to us, while Omonoia have not ruled themselves out.
That leaves Nicosia as one to watch rather than a confirmed destination for Nsiala, with the extended Cypriot transfer window still providing the defender with a potential route away from Ibrox.
