Former Rangers midfielder Brahim Hemdani is being considered for a return to the Algeria national team dugout, according to journalist Romain Molina.
Molina reports that Ali Moucer, the technical director of the Algerian Football Federation, has been pushing for Hemdani to take charge of the national side.
The proposal does not have unanimous backing, but Hemdani has two factors working in his favour: his appointment would not require the federation to commit to a major salary, while he is reportedly willing to work with members of the Algeria staff already planned by the FAF.
The North African's currently do not have a permanent head coach after parting ways with Vladimir Petkovic by mutual agreement following the World Cup.
Hemdani's time at Ibrox
The former Rangers midfielder spent four years at Ibrox between 2005 and 2009, making 108 appearances and becoming a key player for the side in European football under Alex McLeish, Paul Le Guen and Walter Smith, featuring almost entirely in UEFA competition under the latter.
Hemdani won two Scottish Cups, the 2008 League Cup and one Scottish league title during his Rangers career, while also helping the club reach the UEFA Cup final in 2008.
He was also named Rangers' Player of the Year in 2007, underlining the standing he held with the Ibrox support.
Rangers set to sign Algerian winger
Hemdani's potential return to international management comes at an interesting time for Algeria, with the national team preparing for a change in the dugout.
According to the reporting, the former Rangers favourite would represent a relatively inexpensive option for the FAF, while his willingness to work within the federation's planned structure is another factor behind the support for his appointment.
The potential move would also add another former Rangers figure to the international football spotlight at a time when the Ibrox club are welcoming a new Algerian international of their own.
Rangers are set to complete the signing of fellow Algerian Badredine Bouanani from Stuttgart, with the winger undergoing his medical in Glasgow ahead of a season-long loan move with an option-to-buy.
The 21-year-old is expected to provide Derek McInnes with another attacking option following the arrival of Kevin Kelsy.
Bouanani has already represented Algeria at senior level and his arrival would give Rangers another connection to the country's national setup.
It could also see Hemdani call up the winger for international selection.
And if he does get the job, he could find himself overseeing the international career of Rangers' newest Algerian arrival, Bouanani, after the winger completes his move to Ibrox.
