Ben Godfrey backs himself to thrive under Rangers pressure

The new Rangers defender believes expectation is a privilege, not a burden, as he prepares to work under Derek McInnes at Ibrox.

New signing Ben Godfrey believes the pressure that comes with representing Rangers is exactly what he has been searching for as the defender begins a new chapter at Ibrox.

The 28-year-old, who joined on a season-long loan from Atalanta with an option to make the move permanent, faced the media for the first time after completing his move and made clear that the scale of Rangers was a major factor in his decision.

"I couldn't wait to get started and get on the grass and I've enjoyed every second of it," Godfrey said.

"I think the characteristics of the club suit me.

"When I look at the history and the size of the club, I think it's the perfect place to be for me. I'm looking forward to all the challenges.

"I'm excited to work under the manager and it's going to be an exciting year."

Godfrey relishes Rangers pressure

Godfrey also dismissed any suggestion that the expectations surrounding Rangers could prove a burden.

Instead, he believes playing under pressure is a sign a footballer has reached the level they aspire to.

"I think you start to learn as a player that if you don't have any pressure in your career, then you're probably not at the level that you want to be," he said.

"It's a given that when you're at a club this size, there's going to be pressure that comes with it. It's important that you use that in a positive way."

The McInnes factor

The former Everton and Norwich City defender also spoke warmly about his early conversations with Derek McInnes, insisting there is still plenty he can learn despite approaching 30.

"He's great. Obviously, his career speaks for itself. I'm just excited to work together.

"No matter how old you are, even at my age now, there's still plenty that I can learn from the manager. I'll give my all every day for him and in every game.

"He's a great guy and he'll do well for this club."

Life in Italy

Godfrey arrives after a season that included a loan spell with Ipswich Town before returning to parent club Atalanta, while he also reflected on the lessons learned during his time in Serie A.

Moving abroad, he admitted, took him well outside his comfort zone.

"I give credit to any player that moves out of their home country to start a new life and play football, it's difficult," he said.

"I've learned a lot football-wise. The game is played completely differently, tactically and technically.

"People come back and say you didn't play many games, but it was a chapter that I took a lot from."

The defender believes those experiences, together with the highs and lows of his career, have left him better equipped for the challenge awaiting him in Glasgow.

"I've had all sorts of experiences throughout my career," he said.

"It's made me the person that I am today. It's made me the player that I am today.

"I don't regret anything throughout my career. I learn from every day and every week that goes by."

Another leader at Ibrox

Godfrey also outlined the standards he intends to bring to Rangers' dressing room, revealing he sees part of his role as helping younger players develop.

"At 28 years old now, I think I've experienced quite a lot of things in football.

"I can drive standards everywhere. That's what the manager and this club expect of the players, so I'll certainly do that.

"I'm someone that's always going to be around to tell the young players and teach them what it takes to stay and to break through at this sort of level.

"When undoubtedly there are going to be tough times in a season, we'll be there to keep everyone together and pull through as a group."

Style of play

On the pitch, Godfrey expects supporters to see an aggressive defender determined to impose himself on opponents.

"I'd class myself as front-footed and aggressive," he said.

"I like to bring my personality to the pitch.

"I think that'll suit us, being on the front foot and keeping the pressure on opposition teams."

Those comments are likely to resonate with McInnes, whose recruitment this summer has consistently focused not only on quality but also on character.

"It's not just about the quality," Godfrey added.

"The manager is big on bringing the right type of people into the building.

"The quality is there, but definitely the characters as well."
