Striker not a priority as Danny Rohl targets key transfer reinforcements

Rangers January transfer strategy is becoming increasingly clear under Danny Röhl - and one position is notably not at the top of the priority list: striker.

While names like Tuur Rommens and Tochi Chukwuani dominate the headlines, Rangers are understood to have no plans to sign a new forward unless there is a departure - specifically unless Danilo leaves either permanently or on loan.

“For me it’s not just about the nine,” Röhl said. “In general, we have to increase our goals.”

Rather than reshaping the attacking line, Röhl’s focus is firmly on strengthening the structure of the team.

“Let’s do the first job with the first two players,” he added. “Then let’s see what we can do next.”

Those “first two players” are widely believed to be Rommens and Chukwuani reinforcements at left-back and defensive midfield, the two positions Rangers view as most urgent.

“There’s no secret about the six position,” Röhl admitted. “We have to strengthen this area.”

He outlined the type of midfielder Rangers are targeting.

“You need a ball-winner, you need physical, but you need also players that can dictate the rhythm,” he said. “And we need a good fit for the players around.”

The left-back role is also seen as a key area for improvement.

“If you have an injury there, it’s good to have competition,” Röhl said. “This is the next step for Jayden [Meghima] to take the challenge.”

By contrast, Rangers believe their striker department is numerically settled.

Yousef Chermiti has emerged as first choice after his Old Firm heroics, while Bojan Miovski offers a reliable alternative.

That leaves Danilo as third choice - a situation that has become increasingly uncomfortable given his wage, transfer fee and availability.

Rangers paid a reported €6 million for Danilo in the summer of 2023 under Michael Beale, but injuries and inconsistent form have prevented him from establishing himself.

Across his Ibrox career, sustained fitness has been elusive, and when available he has often been behind others in the pecking order.

As things stand, Rangers are not willing to add another striker on top of that group.

“We are looking at some other positions as well,” Röhl said. “But I can give you the guarantee that we work also on different positions.”

Behind the scenes, Danilo has reportedly been transfer-listed alongside Kieran Dowell, Rabbi Matondo, Clinton Nsiala and Nedim Bajrami, with Lyall Cameron loan-listed.

Röhl confirmed conversations have already taken place.

“Yes, I had some conversations with some players,” he said. “Some players feel it’s not easy to be part of the regular squad.”

However, Rangers are realistic about the financial reality.

“Any deal involving Danilo will be a loss,” a club source indicated.

The priority is freeing wages, reducing congestion, and creating space for smarter squad management.

There has been early-stage loan interest from Brazil, but nothing concrete has materialised.

Until Danilo leaves, Rangers striker plans remain on hold.
