Ross McCrorie has completed his Rangers medical and is now finalising the remaining formalities ahead of an official return to Ibrox.
The versatile defender is set to become Derek McInnes’ first signing as Rangers manager after the club moved to bring the academy graduate back to Glasgow.
McCrorie’s return will see him step into the famous number two shirt, taking over from James Tavernier, who departed Rangers this summer after an 11-year spell wearing the number.
The 28-year-old originally came through the Rangers youth system and made his first-team debut in 2017, quickly becoming one of the most highly-rated young players at the club.
After finding opportunities limited at Ibrox, McCrorie moved away in search of regular first-team football, joining Portsmouth before making a permanent move to Aberdeen.
His performances in the north east earned widespread praise, particularly from McInnes, who described him as an “absolute dream of a boy” and famously labelled him a “Rolls-Royce” of a player.
McCrorie later moved to Bristol City, where he established himself as a reliable English Championship performer, making 89 appearances over three seasons.
His return gives Rangers a player capable of operating across multiple positions, with the Scotland international able to feature at right-back, centre-back, midfield and wing-back.
The defender’s arrival comes at a time of major change at Ibrox, with McInnes reshaping the squad ahead of the new season.
With Tavernier’s departure leaving a significant void on the right side of defence, McCrorie’s familiarity with the club and his experience at senior level make him a natural fit.
An announcement is now expected once the final details are completed, with McCrorie poised to become the first new arrival of the McInnes era at Rangers.
