Ross McCausland appears increasingly likely to leave Rangers this summer after reports linked the Northern Ireland international with a permanent move to League One side Luton Town.
According to the Rangers Review, the English club are interested in signing the 23-year-old winger, who is entering the final year of his Rangers contract and is expected to depart Ibrox before the transfer window closes.
The interest comes after McCausland returned from a season-long loan spell at Aris Limassol, where he was given the opportunity to play regular first-team football following a lack of opportunities at Rangers.
Loan spell failed to reignite Rangers career
McCausland made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Cypriot club, scoring four goals and registering three assists.
While the spell provided consistent senior football and valuable experience in a different league, it ultimately failed to strengthen his case for a long-term future at Rangers.
Nor did it convince Aris Limassol to make the move permanent despite holding an option to buy.
Cypriot football podcaster and expert on the domestic game on the Island nation, Stel Stylianou believes the winger's loan was useful from a developmental perspective but stopped short of being the breakthrough many had hoped for.
"To say he has been underwhelming would be fair, although Aris haven't had many standout players this season.
Stylianou also questioned McCausland's overall impact during his time in Cyprus.
"He has only completed 90 minutes five times, hasn't scored many and hasn't assisted many either."
The assessment reflects a season that can largely be viewed as functional rather than transformative. McCausland remained involved, gained valuable senior minutes and contributed in the final third, but the significant improvement required to force his way back into Rangers' plans never fully materialised.
Fresh opportunity under Derek McInnes
The winger travelled with the first-team squad during pre-season and featured in behind-closed-doors friendlies, but he has struggled to establish himself among McInnes' preferred options ahead of the new campaign.
With Rangers continuing to reshape the squad, McCausland has emerged as one of several players who could leave permanently before the transfer deadline.
Rangers set to cash in
McCausland joined Rangers from Linfield in 2019 before progressing through the academy and making his senior debut in 2023.
He enjoyed a breakthrough during the 2023/24 season, scoring his first goals for the club and earning his maiden senior call-up for Northern Ireland.
Across his Rangers career, he has made 66 appearances and scored seven goals, but opportunities have become increasingly limited over the past two seasons.
With just one year remaining on his contract, this summer represents Rangers' final realistic opportunity to receive a transfer fee.
Luton Town are the latest side to be linked with the winger, and a permanent move would offer McCausland the chance to secure regular first-team football while allowing Rangers to continue streamlining McInnes' squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
