Rangers have confirmed the signing of Belgian full-back Tuur Rommens from Westerlo on an initial three-and-a-half-year contract, subject to international clearance and the granting of a work permit.

The 22-year-old becomes Danny Rohl’s second addition of the January transfer window as the Ibrox boss continues to strengthen key areas of his squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Rommens began his senior career at Genk, making his debut at just 18 years old in 2021 after progressing through the club’s youth system. He moved to Westerlo in the summer of 2023, returning to a club he had previously spent time with as a youngster, and quickly established himself as a regular.

The Belgian defender made 24 appearances in his debut season and went on to miss just two league matches across the following campaign as Westerlo narrowly missed out on European qualification.

At international level, Rommens has represented Belgium at every youth age group and featured against Scotland in Under-21 European Championship qualifiers in both 2023 and 2024.

He will wear the number 25 jersey at Rangers.

Head Coach Röhl welcomed the signing, praising the defender’s attributes and long-term potential.

“I am delighted to welcome Tuur to the club,” Röhl said.

“He is a young and hungry player who adds real quality and physicality to the group and increases competition in a key area of the pitch.

“We believe he will be a fantastic addition to the side and an important asset in the years ahead.”

Speaking to Rangers TV after completing his move, Rommens admitted joining the club was an easy decision.

“I’m very happy to be here. It’s a dream to play for a club like this. Only positive feelings,” he said.

“I think everybody knows the club, Rangers. If a club like this comes and they’re interested in you, you want to be part of it. The most important thing for me is that they believe in me.”

Rommens revealed talks with Rangers had been ongoing for several months.

“A couple of months ago, we had some talks with the manager. I was convinced from the first moment to come here.”

The Belgian highlighted Rohl’s faith in him as a major factor in the move.

He said: “If you feel that the coach believes in you, you have more confidence to play. It’s very important.”

Describing his style, Rommens said: “I’m a left-back. I always give 100%. I go down the line a lot of times. Attacking and defence, I do both.”

He also spoke of his excitement at playing in front of Rangers supporters at Ibrox: “If you can play for 50,000 people every home game, it’s a big motivation to give everything for the supporters.”

While the transfer has now been confirmed, Rommens match involvement is expected to be managed carefully. Rangers Review have reported that the club will not rush the defender into action due to the effects of a previous knock, with his minutes likely to be built up gradually.

Club sources suggest Rommens should be fully fit within three to four weeks and will continue training during that period as he prepares to compete with Jayden Meghoma for the left-back position.

We do however understand that the Belgian has already taken part in a training session with the squad today, although the exact intensity of his involvement remains unclear.

With Rangers pushing on in the title race and targeting silverware in the second half of the season, Rommens’ arrival adds depth, competition, and long-term stability to a position that has needed reinforcement.

For the player himself, the move represents the next step in his development.

“I’m 22. I’ve played a lot of games in the Belgian first division,” he said.

“I think it was the right timing for me to make this step to a bigger club. I’m happy to be here.”

Rangers supporters will now look forward to seeing Rommens in action once he is fully fit and ready to make his Ibrox debut.
