Rangers youngster Lyle Wark has joined Auchinleck Talbot on loan ahead of a huge Scottish Cup first-round derby against Cumnock Juniors.

The defender, who is currently part of Rangers' Under-19 squad, has made the move to Beechwood as he looks to gain further experience in senior football.

Wark has progressed through the Rangers Youth Academy since joining the club as an 11-year-old and has enjoyed some memorable moments during his time in the Ibrox set-up.

The youngster was a prominent figure during Rangers' 2024 Scottish Youth Cup campaign, while he also played his part in the club's successful Glasgow Cup campaign.

Wark has already had a taste of senior football last season, having recently enjoyed a short loan spell with Forfar Athletic, and his move to Talbot represents another opportunity to continue that development.

But he could hardly have landed at a more intriguing time.

Rangers youngster set for derby debut

Auchinleck are preparing for a meeting with Cumnock Juniors in the first round of the Scottish Cup – one of the fiercest local rivalries in the lower leagues of Scottish football.

The two East Ayrshire towns are separated by little more than a mile, with the rivalry stretching back generations and deeply intertwined with the area's mining heritage.

The fixture has traditionally attracted huge interest, with meetings between the sides in the 1970s and 1980s drawing crowds of around 6,000, while one Scottish Junior Cup encounter in the mid-1970s attracted more than 8,000 spectators.

There is also plenty of history between the clubs on the pitch.

Talbot's own history records the infamous 1972 season when Cumnock inflicted an 11-0 defeat on their neighbours, before Auchinleck rebuilt and went on to embark on one of the most successful periods in their history.

The rivalry has continued into the modern era, with both clubs now competing in the revamped fifth tier.

Indeed, the Scottish Cup has already provided a major stage for the fixture in recent years. Auchinleck and Cumnock met in the first round in September 2025, in what was their first-ever Scottish Cup meeting.

The latest Scottish Cup draw has now paired them together again, with Talbot travelling to Townhead Park on Saturday, October 3. Auchinleck's official website confirmed that the draw had produced a repeat meeting with their "bitter rivals".

It will provide a huge introduction to life at Beechwood for Wark. The Rangers youngster will be stepping into a fixture where local bragging rights matter enormously, while also gaining experience of the atmosphere and demands that come with a major cup tie.

Rangers' Talbot connection

The move also continues a long-standing Rangers connection at Auchinleck.

According to Talbot, Wark becomes only the third player since the 1970s with a Rangers connection to join the club.

In the early 1970s, Irvine-born defender Willie White joined Talbot, while former Rangers Under-20 player Ross Harvey spent time at Beechwood in 2016 and Wark will now look to make his own mark in Talbot colours.
