Rangers fans may soon see one of their out-of-favour players exit the club.

Last month, new head coach Russell Martin ordered several former first-team players to train separately from the main group, informing them they were not in his plans.

This list included Rabbi Matondo, Ben Davies, Jose Cifuentes, Leon King, and Clinton Nsiala.

Another player in that group, Ridvan Yilmaz, is set to move away from Ibrox, with Turkish giants, and his former club, Besiktas reportedly having reached an agreement to secure his services.

According to Besiktas’ club president, the transfer is expected to be finalized soon, signalling the imminent departure of the left-back from the Scottish Premiership side.

Yilmaz has been a bit-part figure in Rangers’ recent campaigns since joining from the Turkish side in 2022 under Giovanni Van Bronckhorst.

A combination of inconsistent form and recurring injuries has seen the full-back drop in and out of the team.

He did make a decent impression at right-back against Celtic last January but quickly slipped back into poor form and failed to dislodge Jefte from the left side of defence.

The opportunity to return to Turkey and play for one of the country’s most prestigious clubs appears to be an attractive proposition for Yilmaz.

Besiktas’ interest, and now reported agreement, seems the best move for all involved. Martin is looking for a more physical and imposing side this year, qualities Yilmaz, despite his undoubted talent, does not quite offer.

Rangers, already in need of a starting left-back, now have a vacancy and freed-up wages to secure the player who will allow new signing Max Aarons to play in his preferred right-back position.

James Tavernier may also be permanently converted to centre-back as the captain enters his tenth, and what is expected to be his final, year at Ibrox.

In total Yilmaz made 74 appearances for Rangers across three seasons, scoring twice.

No fee has yet been reported for the deal, but it is expected to be a permanent exit for the diminutive Turkish international, for whom the move to Ibrox, for various reasons, simply never worked out.
