Struggling Rangers look set to add some strength to their faltering backline ahead of Sunday’s crucial Old Firm match against bitter rivals Celtic.

The Gers defence has been leaking goals left right and centre at the start of the campaign, conceding 17 goals in just competitive 10 games since Russell Martin was appointed head coach, including six away to Brugge on Wednesday evening as they were dumped out of the UEFA Champions League in Belgium without a whimper.

There has been a major reshuffling of the backline at Ibrox this summer, Leon Balogun and Adam Devine were released, before the sales of Robin Propper, Jefte, Ridvan Yilmaz and Robbie Fraser, with Ben Davies loaned out for the final year of his deal with the Glasgow giants.

Replacing them have been permanent recruit Emmanuel Fernandez alongside incoming loanees Nasser Djiga, Jayden Meghoma and Max Aarons. Each to ever decreasing levels of success so far.

John Souttar has been occupying the left sided spot at the heart of defence, looking out of place on his weaker side, contributing to Rangers lack of defensive cohesion and worrying number of goals conceded.

This looks set to change, with a big left footed centre half set to arrive at the club ahead of Sunday's Old Firm showdown.

Canadian international Derek Cornelius looks set to agree a permanent move to Scotland, joining the 55-time champions, with the length of contract for the 27-year-odl not yet revealed but expected to be for at least three years, joining from French Ligue 1 club Marseille.

Impressive during spells with Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS, and Swedish side Malmo, the 35-time capped Les Rouges defender has struggled to maintain a starting position in the South of France, appearing just 24 times since his arrival last August.

Excellent in the air, the 6-foot 2 defender is also noted for his passing accuracy, particularly passes into the final third. Rangers may look to utilize his long ball accuracy for a quick turnaround, something they have missed in their backline since the departure of Connor Goldson last summer.

He is also very successful with his sliding tackles, as well as his interceptions. This should help Martin and his side eradicate the amount of teams able to play through the centre of defence so quickly and fluidly, which has cost the side multiple times already this summer.

Expect an announcement of this and Miovski by midday tomorrow barring any last minute issues.

Rangers could yet add fresh firepower along with former Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski, before Monday’s deadline, with out-of-favour Everton striker Youssef Chermiti firmly on the radar to join the club on a loan deal.

The North Macedonian international has passed his medical and has been granted a visa for his move to Ibrox while Rangers club doctor Gary Ramsay is en-route to Manchester to complete the medical of Chermiti.

Russell Martin, though, insists he won’t put a number on how many new faces might arrive before the window slams shut.

Speaking to the media today ahead of Sunday’s match he said: “There’s no set target in terms of signings.

“Behind the scenes there’s plenty going on, as there always is at this stage, and we’re doing everything we can to strengthen the group.

“In the next couple of days, anything can happen, some deals might get done early, others could go right down to the wire.

“Right now, we go with the squad we have. If we can add to it before Sunday, brilliant. If not, I’m happy with the players already here.”

Under severe pressure the former Southampton boss needs to improve his squad, and quickly, finding players who suit, and believe in his complex style.

Failure to change quickly, and win on Sunday could see his Ibrox tenure end as one of the shortest in history.
