Rangers FC have already strengthened their squad across the frontline this transfer window with the signings of wingers Václav Černy and Óscar Cortés, and striker Hamza Igamane.
It appears, however, Philippe Clement is not yet done adding to the depth and quality available to him on the wings. Per Viola News, Rangers have enquired about the possibility of signing Josip Brekalo from Serie A side Fiorentina.
Details about any deal remain scarce for now but with the transfer window to close in nine days, negotiations can be expected to progress quickly if there is any substance to the rumors.
Who is Josip Brekalo?
Josip Brekalo was born on 23rd June, 1998 in Zagreb, Croatia. He spent his entire youth career at local club Dinamo Zagreb, breaking into the first team in 2015.
After 11 senior appearances across all competitions for Dinamo, in which he scored one goal, Brekalo signed for German club VfL Wolfsburg in 2016. Over the next seven years, he scored 22 goals in 128 total appearances for the Wolves, and had two loan spells away: VfB Stuttgart and Torino .
In January 2023, he signed for Fiorentina but was loaned out to Hajduk Split in January, 2024. He has represented his country at all age groups—from U14 to U21—and scored four goals for the senior national team in 35 appearances.
Brekalo is versatile, able to play anywhere across the frontline, but usually starts off the left wing. He has found himself on the fringes of Fiorentina’s squad recently, and with two years left on his contract, now might be the right time for him to seek new pastures.
If Rangers can find the right deal, perhaps on loan with an option or obligation to buy next summer, Brekalo will add proven quality and extensive experience to Philippe Clement’s squad for the 2024-25 campaign.
