For many people of my generation (born in the early 80's), the phrase Tennents Sixes takes you back to a nostalgic place where you went every winter with your pals from the Boy's Brigade, or school to Hall 4 in the SECC and you got to see players from all the top teams compete against each other across a weekend of short 15 minute games.
When the tournament was relaunched earlier this year, with the event taking place at Braehead Arena at the beginning of October, this time featuring 'legends' teams of all 12 SPFL Premiership teams competiting against each other during an extended international break, it gave me the thought of writing about who i'd like to see line up for Rangers 'legends' in this tournament.
Without knowing the squad parameters for the competition, I've made some assumptions for my ultimate Rangers 'legends' Tennents Sixes squad.
The squad will be 10 players, with one goalkeeper - and a player/coach. As with the historic tournament (and modern iterations such as the popular Sky Masters Football, and the Baller League), rolling subs will be in effect.
I've also made it that it doesnt feature any players that are currently signed to a professional team can play. So here goes!
Player-Coach: Barry Ferguson. This one picks itself surely. Barry has been a player in the last 3 Scottish Masters legends tournaments.
Goalkeeper: Allan McGregor. Another safe pick. Involved with the club again now as current goalkeeping coach in the Derek McInnes hierarchy.
McGregor is head and shoulders above other retired keepers from the recent era. McGregor is up there in the conversation with Andy Goram and Chris Woods for me as an all-time great Rangers goalkeeper, and having only retired a couple of seasons ago, will still be more than agile enough to be an imposing presence in the Rangers goal at Braehead Arena.
Recent Scottish Masters goalkeepers for Rangers have been Cammy Bell, Roy Carroll and Graeme Smith.
Defenders: Alan Hutton, Bruno Alves, Andy Halliday.
Anyone that has played five or six-a-side football will know that have fitness and the ability to get up and down the pitch is a massive asset to the game. Therefore youth will play a massive part in successful teams.
Having Andy Halliday available having just retired at the end of last season gives Rangers some youth, plus a natural left footed option to compliment Alan Hutton on the other side. Bruno Alves is someone that's played Masters football before for Rangers too (in the 2024 tournament).
Midfielders: Steven Davis, Scott Arfield.
Like Halliday before, having recently retired Scott Arfield seems a no brainer. Arfield, like Hutton is no stranger to Premier Sports coverage which is another reason why i think both will be involved.
Arfield will provide a goal threat and will still possess a natural level of fitness beyond someone like a Pedro Mendes who played in the 2025 Scottish Masters tournament.
Steven Davis is one of the all time greatest modern Rangers midfielders, and it would be great to see him line up alongside Barry Ferguson, even just for a few minutes in a dream midfield partnership
Forwards: Jermain Defoe, Martyn Waghorn, Kyle Lafferty.
In a running theme, I've gone for players who should still possess a modicum of natural fitness, and be durable enough to last a weekend tournament.
Thats why i've left off names like Kris Boyd and Nacho Novo, who have been involved in recent Scottish Masters tournaments but picked up injuries.
Availability has also came into it for me, and Waghorn having recently been part of the Baller League tournament is someone thats shown aptitude for indoor 6 a side competition. (That's not the only reason he is here though, otherwise you could also see Brandon Barker, and no-one wants that again!).
Jermain Defoe is possibly the most natural finisher Rangers have had since Ally McCoist, and could be very successful in this tournament.
Lafferty (still only 38!) is currently playing juniors with Johnstone Burgh and remains very popular with the Rangers support, and can often be seen on the after dinner speakers circuit with the likes of Davis, Arfield and Defoe,
Notable mentions: When discussing with my colleagues at The 4th Official who they would choose - the following names also came into the reckoning. Niko Kranjcar; Madjid Bougherra, Sasa Papac, Sone Aluko, Nikica Jelavic, Kevin Thomson, Carlos Cuellar & Neil Alexander.
