Former Rangers striker Kenny Miller has joined Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv as an assistant coach where he will be working under former Celtic manager Ronny Deila.

Miller, who had three spells with Rangers along with one season at Celtic Park, famously helped cost Deila his job with the Hoops, netting the opener on the day Mark Warburton’s Gers, then in the second tier, eliminated Celtic from the Scottish Cup at the semi final stage at Hampden Park in 2016.

Miller first joined Rangers in 2000, netting 11 in 35 under Dick Advocaat, including a famous five against St Mirren – but after three appearances in the following season, he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan before later making the move permanent.

He returned to Scotland with Celtic before making a controversial comeback to Rangers via Derby County. Despite chants of ‘stick your Kenny Miller up you’re a*rse’ ringing around Hampden at the 2008 Scottish Cup final – Miller was resigned by then-manager Walter Smith just weeks later.

He would win two Scottish Premier League titles, a Scottish Cup and a League Cup before departing for Bursaspor in January 2011 as the club’s financial issues deepened.

He once again rejoined Rangers in 2014, spending a further four seasons with the club – winning the Scottish Championship and Challenge Cup double in 2016 before retiring in 2020 following a stint with Partick Thistle.

Since entering coaching he has worked with Livingston as player/manager, Newcastle Jets, Western Sydney Wanderers, Falkirk and Huddersfield – before becoming Deila’s assistant in the MLS with Atalanta United.

He impressed the Norwegian boss enough during his time in the United States to be asked to follow him to the Middle East.

Maccabi, despite being reigning champions, currently sit fourth in the table – 12 points behind league leaders Hapoel Be'er Sheva but with a game in hand.

Maccabi announced the appointment the duo via their website in a statement which read: "Maccabi Tel Aviv announces the appointment of Ronny Deila as the new Head Coach until the end of the season.

“Deila will be supported by Kenny Miller and Kenneth Dokken as his assistant coaches.”

Speaking to Maccabi’s club media, Deila said: “I am pleased to join Maccabi Tel Aviv FC, a club with such a rich history.

“I am fully aware that success only comes through hard work and commitment, and I am looking forward to start working with the players to achieve the best results”.

Maccabi's owner, Mitch Goldhar, said: "Ronny made a positive impression throughout the recruitment process.

“He brings a proven track record, significant experience, and strong leadership qualities. Ronny arrives ready to begin work immediately, and we all wish him success."

Miller has made no public comment at the time of writing.
