Rangers recently announced a raft of departures from the clubs youth system, announcing that they were leaving the club having not bridged the gap between the reserve squads and the first team.

These players included some who had made first team appearances such as Archie Stevens and Adam Devine, as well as Cole McKinnon.

McKinnon made his debut in Rangers final league match of the 2021/22 season, the week before the 2022 UEFA Europa League final, scoring in a 3-1 win away to Hearts at Tynecastle.

McKinnon featured sparingly over the next few years but earnt a notable run out under Phillipe Clement against Portuguese side Benfica.

Leaving the club he has been at since a child, McKinnon took to his social media account to leave a touching message about his time at Ibrox.

He said:: "Extremely hard and emotional post for me personally but here goes.

"Playing one single minute for Rangers was enough for me to say I have lived my dream.

"To then go on and score for the club I've always supported was a feeling I've never felt before and can't ever describe properly to anyone that ask me.

"It's something not many people can say and it's something I am extremely proud of an will be entirely grateful for.

"My time is now up at the club and I'm tapping out knowing I gave everything I could ever single day.

"Would like to thank all the staff that helped me along the way including everyone behind the scenes.

"Would also like to thank all my teammates over the years for all the help they've given me.

"Finally, I would like to thank the fans for the support they've given and show every week which is second to none at a club like Rangers.

"Time to watch from afar and I wish the club every success going forward. WATP."

It is always sad to see potential home-grown heroes not make the grade, especially ones which such a clear support and fondness for the club.

Just like Leon King, McKinnon’s route to the first team has been fraught with roadblocks and he has been handled poorly, causing him to not reach his full potential. Hopefully under the new guardianship of Russell Martin we see some more prospects get meaningful, regular minutes. Not just a cameo here and there.
