Hibernian are exploring a deal for former Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo after the Welshman impressed during a trial spell under new head coach Marink Reedijk.

Matondo, 26, has caught the eye during Hibs' preparations and is now attracting interest from the Easter Road club as Reedijk looks to shape his squad.

The winger has been without a club since leaving Norwegian side SK Brann, where he made just three appearances during an injury-disrupted spell.

However, Matondo has been given an opportunity to impress in Scotland after training with Hibs during the international break.

Hibs keen on Matondo

According to the Hibs Observer, the former Rangers player scored twice and provided two assists across two bounce games for Hibs as the club underwent what was described as a 'pre-season on steroids' in La Manga.

That form appears to have convinced the Easter Road side to consider a permanent deal for the former Gers winger.

Matondo is no stranger to Scottish football having spent almost four years at Ibrox after joining Rangers on a permanent four-year contract in July 2022.

He made 70 appearances for the club and scored eight goals during his Rangers career, working under Philippe Clement, Michael Beale, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Danny Rohl.

His time at Ibrox also included a loan spell with Hannover 96 during the 2024/25 campaign before he eventually left Rangers in March 2026 to join Brann on a free transfer.

Matondo's career has been disrupted by injuries at various points, but his latest trial period has given him the chance to demonstrate that he can still make an impact in Scottish football.

The Hibs Observer reports that his ability to provide width could also appeal to Reedijk as he looks to develop his team.

Hibs have previously relied heavily on wing-back systems, while Matondo would offer a more traditional wide option capable of stretching opposition defences.

Faltering career

The Wales international began his career in the Cardiff City and Manchester City academies before making a high-profile move to Schalke as a teenager.

He was just 19 when he joined the Bundesliga club in a deal reported to be worth up to £11 million.

Matondo made 32 appearances for Schalke before gaining further experience on loan with Stoke City and Cercle Brugge.

His Rangers spell ultimately brought him back to British football, although consistency was difficult to achieve during his time at Ibrox.

Now, however, the winger has another opportunity to revive his career in Scotland.

Hibs are believed to be keen on getting a deal done after seeing Matondo impress during his trial, with Reedijk preparing for his first Scottish Premiership campaign as the club's new head coach.

He could reunite with Rangers on December 5, when Derek McInnes’ side head to Edinburgh to face Hibs.
