Rangers long-standing interest in Andreas Skov Olsen has resurfaced after fresh reports suggested the Danish winger could be available for transfer this January window.
Turkish football scout Emir Hanyazici revealed on X that the former Bologna and Club Brugge attacker is keen on a move away from Wolfsburg, with the Bundesliga club open to offers.
“Skov Olsen wants to leave Wolfsburg. The club is open to future offers for the player,” Hanyazici posted.
It is a name that will be familiar to Rangers supporters. The Ibrox club made repeated attempts to sign Skov Olsen during Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s tenure, targeting the winger in both January 2022 and again in the summer window of the same year.
At the time, Skov Olsen was playing for Bologna in Serie A and had already built a reputation as one of Denmark’s most exciting wide forwards.
Rangers were keen to strengthen their attacking options following their title-winning campaign and mid-way through their run to the 2022 UEFA Europa League final, but the finances never aligned.
Instead, the now 26-year-old moved to Club Brugge, where he enjoyed a prolific spell in Belgium.
His time in Bruges saw him flourish in domestic competition and on the European stage, registering goals in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Conference League and becoming a regular for Denmark’s national team until this year.
He made the move to Wolfsburg in January 2025, with the German club hoping he could replicate his Belgian form in the Bundesliga.
However, the transition has not been as smooth as hoped. While Skov Olsen has shown flashes of quality, consistency has been harder to find, and the player now appears open to a new challenge.
For Rangers, the timing is intriguing.
Under Danny Röhl, the club is reshaping its squad with a focus on physicality, structure, and tactical discipline.
While the current January window has prioritised defensive and midfield reinforcements, the long-term attacking profile of the squad remains under review – particularly with several wide players facing uncertain futures.
Rabbi Matondo and Djeidi Gassama have both been linked with potential exits, while Ross McCausland has been loaned out. Findlay Curtis has shown flashes but the teenager remains inconsistent.
Skov Olsen, by contrast, offers proven top-level experience across Serie A, the Belgian Pro League, the Bundesliga, and European competition.
He is a left-footed right winger, capable of playing on either flank, with a strong record for goals and assists from wide areas.
His profile aligns with the type of attacking output Rangers have often lacked in key domestic fixtures, particularly against low blocks.
Financially, however, any move would depend on Wolfsburg’s valuation and Skov Olsen’s wage demands.
Rangers were priced out of a deal in 2022, and while the player is now older and potentially more attainable, his reputation across Europe remains strong – Rangers however have much healthier finances after the 2025 Summer takeover by a 49ers back group.
The winger’s availability also raises the possibility of renewed interest from clubs in Belgium, Italy, and Turkey, where his UEFA Champions League pedigree and international experience remain highly valued.
From a Rangers perspective, Skov Olsen represents on of many “what if” transfer stories from the Van Bronckhorst era – a player the club admired, chased, but ultimately missed out on.
With Wolfsburg now open to offers, that chapter may not be fully closed.
Whether Rangers are in a position to revive their interest remains to be seen.
For now, the focus remains on consolidating the squad for a title push. But if the opportunity arises to bring in a player of Skov Olsen’s pedigree at the right price, it would represent a significant statement of intent.
What is certain is that Skov Olsen’s name is once again back in the Rangers conversation – and this time, the circumstances may finally align.
