A former Rangers midfielder has agreed a move to Australia today, with ex-Gers playmaker Tom Lawrence signing a one-year deal with A-League side Perth Glory.
Lawrence, 31, started at Manchester United as a youngster but joined Rangers on a free transfer from Derby County in the summer of 2022, being signed by former boss Giovanni Van Bronckhorst on a three-year deal and made his debut for the club in a 2-1 win away to Livingston on the opening day of that season.
He scored his first goal for the club just two weeks later, netting against St Johnstone, with further goals coming against Hibernian and a free-kick against Dutch Eredivisie side PSV in the UEFA Champions League playoff round before an achillies injury kept him out until the following August, returning against Ross County.
In total he made 69 appearances for Rangers, scoring 12 and assisting 7, with his most memorable strike coming against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in the 2023/24 season. He was part of the side that won the 2023 Scottish League Cup.
He departed Ibrox this summer, and the 23-times capped Welsh international has finally found a new home down under.
Speaking to the Perth Glory website, Lawrence said: ““I had a call with [Perth Football Director] Stan Lazaridis and the Manager [David Zdrilic] and just listened to their passion for the club and where they want to go and that’s really what settled it in the end.
“I also spoke with [Glory defender] Scott Wootton and he was very complimentary about the club and Perth as a city.
“He basically said just get here as soon as you can, you’ll love it. I’ve been training every day with a guy back home in the UK and I feel like I’m in good shape.
“My body feels good, so I don’t think it’ll take long at all and I’ll be raring to go. I’ve come here to score as many goals and contribute as many assists to help the team as I can.
“I want the team to finish as high as possible and go for whatever we can this season.”
Of the released players this summer, Leon Balogun, Ianis Hagi, Cole McKinnon and Archie Stevens have all found new clubs, with defender Adam Devine the only player still yet to sign for a new club after his Ibrox departure.
Best of luck Tom!
