Rangers manager Danny Röhl has confirmed that midfielder Nedim Bajrami is facing a potentially worrying period on the sidelines after scans revealed a muscle injury picked up against Kilmarnock on Saturday evening is more serious than first feared.
Bajrami was already set to miss tomorrow night’s UEFA Europa League clash with Ferencvárosi in Hungary as he is not registered for the squad, but Röhl admitted the issue may extend well beyond the midweek fixture.
The head coach explained: “It looks like a muscle injury.
“Nedim didn’t feel so bad, but the scan was not positive.
“We will check again, and then it’s week by week.”
The Rangers boss had hoped the Albanian international had escaped a significant problem after Saturday’s 3-0 win at Rugby Park - but the medical update was less encouraging.
He explained: “We thought after the game it was maybe not so serious, but at the moment it looks worse.”
The injury comes at a difficult time for Rangers, who are already dealing with a lengthy list of absentees across the squad – including Oliver Antman, John Souttar, Derek Cornelius and Joe Rothwell.
With European qualification hopes on the line and a punishing December schedule looming, Bajrami’s setback adds further pressure on a team already navigating multiple selection challenges – especially with the playmaker recently returning from a spell in the cold with decent form.
Röhl, while concerned, stressed that the club must now focus on recovery timelines and maintaining a competitive balance in midfield: “We have a lot of injuries right now, and it’s not helpful.
“But we still have a good group together, and we will find solutions.”
The German coach has repeatedly highlighted the strain placed on his squad by the fixture calendar, international travel, and the physical demands of his tactical system - all contributing factors to recent muscle injuries.
As Rangers await a clearer prognosis, Bajrami’s absence leaves Röhl with yet another gap to fill in a critical period.
He did highlight one boost: Mikey Moore’s return.
He said: “Mikey is back, that is a good signal.
“But we have to manage him well because we cannot risk another big injury.”
The boss also confirmed that Rothwell remains out and did not travel with the squad whilst Kieran Dowell, linked with a January window loan move to English side Hull City, has returned to training after being out since an injury in August.
