Rangers started pre-season training with a large group of players who were deemed surplus to requirements by incoming head coach Russell Martin.

These players were ordered to train away from the main group and told they were free to find new clubs and had no future at Ibrox.

Nicknamed the ‘Bomb Squad’ by fans, this group included the now departed Ridvan Yilmaz, Robbie Fraser and Robin Propper as well as Ben Davies, Ross McCausland and Jose Cifuentes, who have since departed on loan.

A few stragglers remain past Monday night’s transfer deadline, Leon King, who turned down a permanent move to Wycombe Wanderers, the injured Rabbi Matondo and French defender Clinton Nsiala.

The latterly mentioned 21-year old centre back was subject of a loan offer in the final days of the window from Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv, with the Ukrainian Premier League champions keen on a temporary move for the player who Rangers signed from Italian Serie A club AC Milan just last summer.

Nsiala however, turned down the move, feeling that the current political situation in the former USSR nation would make it a less-than-ideal place for him to play his football moving forward.

Martin spoke about Nsiala earlier in the window: “He needs to play at this stage of his career” and confirmed he would be allowed to move, either on loan or permanently as he was would not feature at Ibrox this term.

Without a minute of first team action, or even a spot on the bench, so far this season, and training away from the squad, the future looks bleak for Nsiala in Scotland.

A move could still happen to a market that remains open, such as those to the Turkish, Portuguese, Mexican and Saudi leagues, and the Frenchman still has options there, for a few more weeks at least.

Rangers are light on the left hand side of defence, despite the arrival of Canadian defender Derek Cornilius in the final hours of the window, with Brentford loanee Jayden Meghoma the only recognised first team left back at the club.

Nsiala is naturally a central defender, but has been touted as an option to play on the left hand side of the backline in the past, with his skillset similar to former-Ger Calvin Bassey, an injury to Meghoma could perhaps see the defender given an unlikely second chance at Rangers, but with Martin clearly not a fan, the future looks bleak for him should no move come to fruition in the coming weeks.
