Former footballer Michael Stewart has boldly claimed that not a single Rangers player stands a chance of clinching the coveted PFA Scotland Player of the Year award this season.

Stewart reckons no Light Blues star has done enough to merit securing the prestigious individual accolade.

It has been an underwhelming campaign for Rangers under the stewardship of Michael Beale, with the Gers finishing as distant runners-up to rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Although captain James Tavernier has racked up an impressive 17 goals across all competitions, and on-loan Bayern Munich youngster Malik Tillman was named in the PFA Team of the Year, Stewart remains unconvinced any Ibrox star deserves to be crowned Player of the Year.

When speaking on BBC Scotland, Stewart reeled off a list of contenders including Celtic trio Callum McGregor, Kyogo and Reo Hatate, free-scoring Heart of Midlothian marksman Lawrence Shankland and Motherwell goal-getter Kevin van Veen. Aberdeen playmaker Christian Doidge and St Mirren captain Mark O’Hara also earned a mention.

While Stewart acknowledges glimpses of promise at Ibrox, the outspoken pundit insists there is a lack of standout performers deserving of the top individual prize.

Michael Stewart Dismisses Rangers Players for PFA Scotland Player of the Year

"“I don’t really see anyone in the Rangers side individually that you think has excelled enough to be in the running for player of the season,” asserted Stewart.“However, there’s some who have shown signs of positivity for the future. Todd Cantwell has caught the eye, but for me, Nicolas Raskin has really stood out.”"

Michael Stewart added: “He’s not been there for that long, but the little bits I’ve seen of him I can see why they’ve brought him in.

Ryan Jack is over 30, Glen Kamara has drifted a wee bit, and you need that freshness. He’s caught the eye and looks like a good bit of business.”
