It appears the short-lived stint of Rabbi Matondo at Rangers is coming to an abrupt end after only one season, despite the anticipation surrounding his arrival from Schalke last summer.

While injuries have hampered the 22-year-old’s debut campaign in Scotland, failing to score in 23 appearances for the Gers has led to an underwhelming start for the Welsh winger.

With new signing Kieran Dowell poised to pen a three-year deal at Ibrox, Matondo looks poised to be one of the first players shown the exit door as part of a major squad overhaul this offseason, according to The Daily Record

The impending arrival of the Norwich City attacker has seemingly sealed Matondo’s fate.

The 25-year-old Dowell is seeking a career revival after failing to fulfill his potential at Everton, the club he came through the youth ranks with.

Loaned out four times in six years, the playmaker will relish the opportunity to ignite his career while playing European football at Rangers. Matondo appears the unfortunate casualty to make way for the new signing.

Comparisons can be drawn between Dowell and Todd Cantwell, another recent arrival from Carrow Road. Seeking a fresh start, Cantwell has hit the ground running since joining in January, already repaying the faith shown in him. Rangers boss Michael Beale will hope Dowell, too, can rediscover top form at Ibrox.

While there were high hopes Matondo would bring flair and attacking guile following his move from Manchester City, where he began his career, it evidently hasn’t worked out.

As Rangers look to strengthen over the summer, Matondo seems one of the first in line to be moved on in order to facilitate the club’s desire for a squad overhaul. The chance to sign a player of Dowell’s pedigree has only accelerated Matondo’s anticipated exit.
