Rangers could be in line for a sizable transfer fee if reports are to be believed that an unnamed Premier League club has tabled a £20 million bid for former defender Calvin Bassey.
According to Mike Verweij, a prominent Dutch football journalist, the offer from an English top-flight side is on the table much to the ‘amazement’ of many.
The 22-year-old Nigeria international only left Ibrox last summer in a club-record £19.6 million deal that could rise to £22.7 million.
Crucially for Rangers, a 10% sell-on clause was included in the transfer agreement with Ajax.
Bassey has endured a challenging start to life in Amsterdam, prompting speculation that the Eredivisie champions may look to cash in for an instant return on their investment.
Verweij claimed ‘some people at Ajax think that he can be sold one day for £35 million’, indicating they believe there is potential for the defender’s valuation to soar.
Ajax now face a difficult decision over whether to stick or twist with Bassey. While the youngster has showcased glimpses of his defensive qualities, he has at times struggled to adapt to their progressive style of play and building from the back. However, his physical prowess and potential remain appealing.
Potential £35M valuation of Calvin Bassey may benefit Rangers
For Rangers, recouping around £2 million from any deal would provide a timely boost to Michael Beale’s rebuilding plans. The new manager has already confirmed the squad is set for major surgery, especially in attack, after Sunday’s damaging 1-0 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Celtic ended their season. Quality additions are clearly needed if Beale’s men are to overhaul their city rivals next season.
The chance of Rangers pocketing another multi-million pound windfall from Bassey’s sale, just a year on from his big-money move, highlights the acumen shown in negotiating his original transfer with a sizable sell-on clause.
The cash injection would hand Beale extra funds to shape the team in his image over the coming months.
