Rangers manager Michael Beale is reportedly considering selling veteran goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin at the end of the current campaign, according to sources.

The Daily Record claims that the Glasgow giants have set their sights on Stoke City’s Jack Butland and will have to offload players to fund new signings, with McLaughlin ‘likely to be made available’.

The 35-year-old Scotland international has barely featured this season, making just 10 league appearances as backup to first-choice Allan McGregor, whose own contract expires this summer.

While McLaughlin was brought in by former manager Steven Gerrard and recently penned an extension until 2024, his departure would not greatly impact the Ibrox club’s ambitions.

To seriously challenge bitter rivals Celtic for the Premiership title, fresher and higher-quality options between the sticks are surely required.

Butland, give years McLaughlin’s junior, certainly fits the bill. The 30-year-old Englishman is currently on loan at Manchester United from Crystal Palace, demonstrating his abilities and potential to perform on the biggest stages.

For McLaughlin, after two seasons largely spent spectating from the sidelines, a move to seek more regular action may well appeal.

His experiences and professionalism have been praised by management, but in football time stops for no man.

Rangers appear eager to plan for the future, and their longest-serving keeper may sadly no longer figure in such designs.
