Charlie Nicholas advises Rangers to appoint a sporting director, relieving manager Michael Beale of his dual role. David Weir is a top candidate.

Rangers manager Michael Beale has been advised that the club must appoint a sporting director to oversee their transfer strategy, according to former Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas.

Beale recently stated that he would assume responsibility for recruitment following Ross Wilson’s departure to Nottingham Forest.

However, Nicholas has warned the Englishman that taking on the dual roles of manager and sporting director would ultimately prove too demanding.

The outspoken pundit believes David Weir, currently Brighton’s technical director, would be an ideal candidate to fill the void left by Wilson’s exit.

Weir is a Rangers legend and intimately understands the club’s requirements to compete at the highest level.

"“There’s no way Michael Beale can continue performing both jobs at Rangers. He’s a clever, knowledgeable coach but managing Ross Wilson’s responsibilities as well as his own is impossible,” Nicholas told the Daily Express“Beale has told Rangers he can handle both roles until the end of the season but he’s taking on too much.Eventually he’ll get the blame for everything. Beale’s getting caught up in too many issues and it doesn’t look like he has enough support.”"

Nicholas claimed Rangers have no coherent plan and won’t challenge rivals Celtic unless manager Ange Postecoglou departs. He added that unless Beale is empowered to revamp the squad this summer, Rangers will remain also-rans.

The 52-year-old Weir’s experience would enable him to instantly recognise where Rangers need to improve. Nicholas urged the Ibrox board to make a swift appointment.

"“Rangers need to go back to the drawing board. As things stand, they have no hope of toppling Celtic unless Ange Postecoglou leaves,” he said.“And if Beale isn’t able to flex his muscles in the transfer market this summer then they will continue to be a substandard team that’s way behind their Old Firm rivals.”"
