Rangers have reportedly informed centre-back Filip Helander that he is free to leave the club this summer as the exodus from Ibrox begins.

According to sources from Football Insider, the 29-year-old will not be given an extension on his £15,000-a-week contract that ends in May.

Helander’s tenure at Rangers has been marred by injuries, with the player suffering from a long-term foot injury that has kept him out of the entirety of the 2022-23 season.

In total, he has missed more than twice as many games as he has played due to various injuries. The defender also underwent knee surgery during the 2021-22 campaign and was out for almost six months.

The Swedish international was signed by Rangers in 2019 from Bologna for a fee of £3.5 million and played a crucial role in the team’s 2020-21 campaign, helping them win their first league title in ten years under Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool legend had reportedly rated Helander highly and was keen on signing him when he took charge of Aston Villa in November 2021.

Apart from Helander, Rangers could also lose up to eight players for free this summer, including Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, and Ryan Jack, whose contracts will also end in May.

Additionally, the club has yet to decide on whether to extend the contracts of first-team players like Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield. Meanwhile, loan star Malik Tilman’s future is also uncertain.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future, Rangers still have a chance to redeem themselves this season by defeating rivals Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 30 April.

Michael Beale’s side is currently trailing the league leaders by 12 points and is set to miss out on the Scottish Premiership title for the second consecutive year.
