Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has weighed in on whether Billy Gilmour might view a return to Ibrox as a “step back.” Gilmour’s struggles for game time at Brighton have fans wondering where he’ll go next.

"I can’t help but feel a tad disheartened hearing that our very own Billy Gilmour might view a return to Ibrox as a “step back.”"

That’s what former Rangers defender Alan Hutton reckons, anyway.

But hey, we can’t blame the lad for wanting to reach for the stars, can we?

It’s no secret that many of us have been rooting for the young Scottish dynamo to make a triumphant return to the club that nurtured his talent.

Especially since he’s been having a rough go of it at Brighton, struggling for game time under Roberto de Zerbi. The poor guy has only had two Premier League starts and hasn’t seen any action on the pitch since February.

Now, Hutton believes Billy Gilmour deserves more playtime and has a bucketload of potential to offer. But the cold, hard truth is that the dough might not be there for a Rangers reunion, and who knows whether Billy himself would even want it? It’s like being caught between a rock and a hard place.

Chatting with Football Insider, Hutton weighed in on the matter, saying, “You never know. I think the money situation is going to determine that.” He went on to add, “There is no getting away from the fact that he is a Rangers boy and it would be nice to see him back. Does he see that as a step back in his career? Only he can answer that.”

Having started at Chelsea before moving on to Brighton, it’s clear that Gilmour’s journey hasn’t quite been a walk in the park. But let’s not forget, the lad’s only 21, and he’s still got that fire in his belly. The important thing now is for him to think long and hard about where he wants to go next.

As Hutton wisely pointed out, “I think his next move is very important for him to go somewhere and get regular football so he can get back to the player we all know that he is.”

In the end, it’s about what’s best for our boy Billy, and we’ll just have to trust that he’ll make the right call—even if it means leaving our Rangers dreams in the dust.
