Rangers line up new goalkeeper despite Jack Butland’s strong start

Rangers look set to add another player to Russell Martin’s squad this week.

The club have already signed ten players during this window but show no signs of slowing down as the new era continues its rebuild.

While recent links have pointed towards defenders Nobel Mendy and Kassoum Ouattara, the latest target is one for the last line of defence: the goalkeeper.

Jack Butland has been in inspired form at the start of the new campaign, producing several crucial saves across both legs against Panathinaikos, as well as in the opening day draw with Motherwell.

Martin also has home-grown backups in Liam Kelly and Kieran Wright, but with young keepers Mason Munn and Alfie Halliwell out on loan, and both Lewis Budinauckas and Jay Hogarth released this summer, there is room for another addition between the sticks.

That addition looks set to be Arsenal’s 23-year-old goalkeeper Karl Jakob Hein.

The Estonian international is expected to join on a year-long loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer. Hein has been at Arsenal since 2018, having joined from Estonian side Nõmme United, where he broke into the first team at just 16.

He made his Arsenal debut in a 2022 EFL Cup tie against Brighton & Hove Albion, but has not featured for the first team since that 3–1 defeat.

Hein has had loan spells at Reading and, more recently, at La Liga side Real Valladolid, where he kept five clean sheets in 32 appearances despite the club’s relegation.

His performances stood out, and he is seen as a more comfortable option than Butland when it comes to playing out from the back, a key aspect of Martin’s preferred style.

With Butland's strong early-season form, it remains to be seen whether Hein will challenge for the No. 1 spot immediately.

But if he does get the jersey, he’ll need to prove his worth quickly in what promises to be a fiercely competitive season for all positions.
