Former Rangers goalkeeper Andy Firth has made his return to competitive football, almost two years after his last appearance in the professional game.
The 29-year-old started for Altrincham against Hartlepool United on Wednesday night, making his competitive debut for the National League side in England's fifth tier.
It was Firth's first competitive appearance since leaving Welsh club Connah's Quay Nomads in the summer of 2024.
And he marked the return with a victory, as Altrincham came from behind to record a 2-1 win, with former Rangers striker Kane Hemmings among the goalscorers.
Firth joined the Manchester-based club in August in a player-coach role, combining playing duties with responsibility for working with Altrincham's goalkeepers.
Following the game, the former Rangers stopper summed up his return in a brief post on X: "That felt good."

From Rangers title winner to player-coach
Firth's career has taken an unusual route since he left Ibrox. He originally joined Rangers in January 2019 from Barrow after coming through the academy system at Liverpool, where he had worked under Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard would later bring Firth to Rangers after taking charge at Ibrox, having previously coached the goalkeeper during his time with Liverpool’s academy.
Firth's only competitive appearance for Rangers came on the final day of the 2018/19 season against Kilmarnock.
With Allan McGregor suspended, Wes Foderingham started in goal at Rugby Park, but was sent off late in the match.
Firth was introduced as his replacement but immediately faced the difficult task of defending a penalty, conceding from the spot as Rangers went on to lose 2-1.
That remained his only competitive outing for the club, but Firth was part of Gerrard's goalkeeping group during Rangers' title-winning 2020/21 campaign.
McGregor was the undisputed first choice during that historic season, with Firth competing alongside Jon McLaughlin and Kieran Wright for places within the squad.
Rangers completed the league campaign unbeaten to win their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade.
Europa League final season
Firth subsequently spent time on loan at Partick Thistle during the 2021/22 campaign.
That was the season Rangers reached the Europa League final under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, eventually losing to Eintracht Frankfurt on penalties in Seville.
Firth left Rangers permanently that summer and joined Connah's Quay Nomads in Wales.
He spent two seasons with the club before departing in 2024. His next move took him away from playing, as the now 29-year-old joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq as a goalkeeping coach, working under Gerrard once again.
It meant a reunion with the man who had given him his Rangers opportunity five years earlier.
Firth has now returned to England and combined both sides of his experience at Altrincham.
Altrincham saw value in experience
When announcing Firth's arrival, Altrincham boss Neil Gibson highlighted the goalkeeper's experience at Liverpool, Rangers, Barrow and Connah's Quay.
“Andy’s extremely well respected in the game and vastly experienced both with spells at big clubs like Liverpool and Glasgow Rangers and in the National League with Barrow,” Gibson said.
“He was our starting goalie for two years at Connah’s Quay, he’s been a first choice, second choice and third choice at different levels, so he’s more than capable of being a good back-up.
“In terms of coaching he’s worked in Liverpool’s academy, been a training goalie for Liverpool’s first team and he’s been in Saudi Arabia coaching in recent years, too.”
Firth himself expressed his excitement at taking on the dual role when he joined.
“I'm delighted to have joined Alty in a player coach role for the new season and I'm really looking forward to working with the gaffer and Jonah again,” he said.
“I'm excited to get started working with the talented group of goalkeepers at the club and I can't wait to see what we can achieve together this season.”
Now, after more than two years away from competitive action, Firth has finally returned between the sticks.
And his first night back could hardly have gone better: a start, a 2-1 victory and a simple message of feeling good to be back on the pitch.
