Rangers FC announced earlier today on their official website they have completed the signing of 26-year-old Czech winger Václav Černy from VfL Wolfsburg on a season-long loan deal.

Černy, who was part of Czechia’s squad for Euro 2024 over the summer, has become the eighth signing of the transfer window for the Light Blues, after Mohamed Diomande, Jefté, Óscar Cortés, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Liam Kelly, and Hamza Igamane.

On signing for the club, Černy said:

“It is a very nice day for me. I am happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.

“Obviously from the first talks with the manager, it gave me a very good feeling and from there on I would say it went pretty fast. I was happy about the contact and just couldn’t wait to come down here and be here and experience it all.”

Born on 17th October 1997 in Příbram, Czechia, Černy started playing football for local side FK Příbram before joining Ajax Amsterdam’s youth system in 2013. He played for Jong Ajax from 2014 to 2019, and sporadically for the senior Ajax side between 2015 and 2019.

Manager Philippe Clement spoke of Černy’s signing:

“I am delighted to welcome Václav to the squad, he is an exciting player, with valuable experience in European football.

“He has already shown his attacking qualities during his time in the Eredivisie and at Wolfsburg and he will further strengthen our attacking options in the squad. I feel as a club and staff we can continue to help him as a player to reach new levels and I am excited to see what the season holds for him at Rangers.”

In 2019, Černy joined fellow Eredivisie side FC Utrecht, going on loan to FC Twente in 2020 before signing for them permanently in 2021. Two years later, he was on the move again, joining VfL Wolfsburg in June, 2023.

Director of Recruitment Nils Koppen commented:

“Firstly, I would like to welcome Václav to Rangers, and I am looking forward to seeing him as part of the squad.

“We have been working hard to bring in talented players with potential and Václav is a winger who has proven contributions in top leagues in Europe. It is fantastic to have him join the squad here.”

Černy has scored 63 goals in 219 club appearances across all competitions, and six goals in 17 senior appearances for the national team. He should add some much needed experience and impetus to the Gers’ attack this season.

The deal is subject to international clearance.
